The following is a basic plot synopsis of "The Kraken Wakes" by John Wyndham for those of you who want to know....

*Spoilers ahead*

The novel describes three phases of an alien attack. In the first phase objects from outer space land in the oceans. Investigations show that 'there is something intelligent down there'. Phase two starts with ships being attacked causing havoc to world shipping. Shortly after the aliens start 'harvesting' the land by sending up 'sea tanks', for the purpose of capturing and kidnapping humans from small seaside settlements. Ren, talking of drag racing, I nearly got nailed by Don Green's Rat Trap top fuel dragster at Goodwood this year. I got picked up by a woman who turned out to be a hooker after my money. Idiotically, I thought she actually was attracted to me. We met in my hotel, but we had to take a cab ride to "her place". So, I went to the Czech consulate to see if there was anything I could do. One piece of my luggage was a computer I was going to need, when I met my contact in Sophia, who had a machine I was supposed to start up. Alas, there was nothing I could do. Communication and transportation were in a state of "flux" in those days. So I bought a change of clothes, hung around the Sophia Sheraton a few days, met some Scotland football fans who were there for a Scotland v. Bulgaria match, almost got my butt kicked by the Scotland football team, Flew back to Prague to get my stuff, and eventually came home. In retrospect, yes it was all quite humorous.

I go to get in the taxi, and immediately one of the armed military/police guys approaches the driver. They have an INTENSE discussion, and the military guy TAKES the taxi guy's paperwork and walks away. The driver motions me into the car and we drive off. First, I negotiate the fare for the ride based on advance intelligence from a coworker who had been there. We drive along for a while, then suddenly pull into a side street AND ANOTHER CAR PULLS IN RIGHT BEHIND!!! I thought: "This is it. I'm going to get my throat cut and my body dumped somewhere in China. It's the end." Actually, I got transfered into another taxi (that had the right paperwork to go to my hotel or something.)

I used to imagine myself some sort of international spy/playboy, but in reality, I was just a technician, running all over the place, making machines work.
When I got done in that city and had to go to another city, way in the north of China, I booked a flight (with the help of local rep. who finally showed up) to my destination. They didn't tell me that the flight stopped in some other city on the way. We deplaned, and Iwas wandering around this podunk airport in the middle of CHINA waiting to get on the flight continuation. Of course, I did not speak Chinese, and did not understand the anouncements. La la la - I'm wandering around this little airport, when they come and get me, and drag me to the line to get on the plane. They apparently knew to find the big dumb American and get him on the plane. That's service!

One of the other fun things was when we went to Baku, Azerbaijan. We ran into some Iranian students, eager to practice their English, and we got to talking. They asked us how we liked Baku.
