Hey Joey - I've been curious as to whether it might be fun to have stats on the last time a word has appeared - like Days before.
1:55 am
licketySplitAUS
What do you think?
1:55 am
joey
i have been playing for quite a while now, and this is the first time that I have seen a not common word repeated like that.
1:55 am
joey
how tough would it be?
1:56 am
rosalind230
you very often have the same words appearing
1:56 am
FMitch
you love your stats don't your likety, you could have like the top 10 most regular and the the 10 rarest?
1:56 am
licketySplitAUS
Not tough - just need all the solutions.
1:56 am
joey
I agree, but they are usually very easy words, the volcano comes to mind
1:57 am
joey
10 rarest would be tough. there are just so many
1:57 am
licketySplitAUS
FMtich - yeah could be interesting - but Rarest - I'd say that'd be about 150,000 ;-)
1:57 am

mad + German + cricket.... interesting combo...
2:36 am

I'll go along with the mad bit.....you need to be!
2:36 am
mattygroves
Her husband was the nearly blind referee...the joys of club cricket :)
2:36 am
Nani
that is a crazy clue
2:36 am

Umpire, not referee
2:37 am

2:37 am

Umpire + scorer, Husband and Wife - no chance of any appeals then...
2:37 am

Sorry, yes. And laws, not rules. And innings, not inning. And you don't have to run when you hit the ball. And you carry your bat...
2:38 am

There is a wonderful explanation of cricket in Bill Bryson's Down Under - everytime I read it, I cry with laughter.

There's a high scoring wh6/51, but it's a bit early in the day for a shot of this one.

It is... nice one, FMitch!

Matty, I don't know the origins, but it means ...dubious, poorly made or thought out; also underhand (shonky car deal dealer)
3:06 am
Svet
Hi matty, i use shonky all the time, "something that's not put together right".Don't know where it comes from but i picked it up in Australia..
3:06 am
jo_jo
svet, isnt that usually described as shoddy?
3:06 am
Haz1558
Good morning all. Just getting started on the grid.
3:07 am
sprite
Shonky sounds better, though.
3:07 am
trishtrash
jo_jo, shonky is more of a slang term. Hi Haz :) And bye, I'm done ... have a good day everyone. Hang in there, Sprite & family
3:07 am
Nani
any hints for the ho5/24?
3:07 am
Svet
Yeah that's also used here, both are equally good for it i think.
3:07 am
mattygroves
If you read Terry Pratchett, you'll get a new view on Shonky. Heh.
3:07 am
jo_jo
grr that explains y it didnt show up in my word list
3:08 am
FMitch
Morning Haz, hows you?
3:08 am

I find it interesting how groups of related words often show up in the same grid - the s4 and w5 today, a while ago we had curds and whey on the same day - think it's a conspiracy?
3:16 am
sprite
Must be, amandacath! We used to have a fish in every grid, for months and months on end.
Did I ever mention I hate K-words?
3:16 am
kkiln
never knew that one....thanks Sprite
3:17 am
FMitch
Ahh but at least there are only 6 of them today sprite :)
3:17 am

Yeah, I miss the "find-the-fish" game!
3:20 am

3:20 am

I have 4, none of them even remotely delicious, and I would really wanna K4/12 the other 2.

Haz1558

3:23 am

Le5 is plural of Le4/4, anagram of the christmas N4.
I did not k4 that word, dick, I have it but never tasted it. Sounds nice indeed, for a K-word that is.

3:28 am

I hate words that begin in vowels. For some reason, I find those really difficult (even when I've heard of the word)
3:28 am

Oh, that doesn't bother me at all. I like the freedom of it.
3:28 am

3:30 am
sprite
matty, I agree. And I heard more people say exactly the same thing.
3:31 am
amandacath
Me too Sprite - I'm also glad it came back into fashion before my body is absolutely way over the limit of following it! I'm pushing the limit as it is, but 3 years later will probably be the end of bare tummies in public for me!
3:32 am

Last year, when it was so very hot, there was this young mother at school, pregnant again, with very colourfull clothes and a kind of bandana under the big belly and a short T-shirt above it. It was positively beautiful to look at.
3:32 am

Morning all! Matty introduced me to this and I blame her for the fact that I've done nothing but walk the dogs this morning!
3:33 am

Hi Sue!

mattygroves
You could always reproduce it in Excel.
3:42 am
ExWren
I've read some of the chat, it seems that there are some weird words?
3:43 am
mattygroves
Or hit Print Screen, and insert it into Word or Adobe or a picture programme to print it.

How do I do those Matty?

Did someone ask for the other Le5? I think it's a musical word for slow.
3:46 am
mattygroves
You should have a button called Prt Scrn or Print Screen - hit that. Go into Word, and click Ctrl+V (that's the Ctrl button and v at the same time). You should have a reproduction of yor screen. You can then fiddle with it to resize. Cheers.

I'm still trying to find the in7 you spoke of earlier, FMitch.
3:54 am

That In7 is misleading. Forget opposite of out. Start thinking black fluid. And make a compound.
3:54 am
amandacath
Got the in7 - nice word!
3:55 am
FMitch
I's a strange word, would have thought it was 2 seperate ones. i (3 letters) + an h4.
3:55 am
mattygroves
Got the first three letters - can't imagine what the other four are (in7)
3:55 am

Just try making compounds with it, you'll be there soon enough :)

Molly Ringwald, Molly Malone, Moll Flanders.... I'm still stuck. Even checked out the Gauntlet on IMDB, no Mollys
4:29 am
amandacath
Ok, found it. But what does the Gauntlet or Molly have to do with it?
4:30 am
sprite
It is in the movie itself. People are betting against Clint making it to court with his prisoner Molly. The bets are in the horse races and they refer to it with "Molly No+s4". So I agree it should be a valid word.
4:31 am
amandacath
Ahhhh - now I understand.

I'm off for a bit - see you in a little while!

Hi folks. I'm enjoying the grid but wondering why it allow's Aladdin's Mum (Widow Tw****) and not the 3 'rude' wa words that are sourced from it. It won't allow 'whoo!', 'hoik/s', 'oiks' is ''yonks' either.

5:24 am
Jera
What do you mean by cursorialy challenged??
5:27 am
gramma
Jera, I think she means when you forget to move your little pointy arrow back to the grid and you type your words in the chat
5:28 am
Atalante
but didn't people have to do that with the old version of babble?
5:30 am
Jera
I think it's easier to forget here because the word box & the chat box are closer together. Before you had to go waaaaay down to the bottom of the page to chat... a very definite movement before chatting.

Hi all! - I think the problem with the cursors now is that you used to have to scro;; back up to the word list from the message box and now you can see them both at the same time you forget to move the cursor back -I'm earning a golod award in it!
5:31 am

OK, "nooner" is a word in MY vocabulary

7:36 am

Hopefully he will be going to kindergarten this fall, but his birthday is end of September so he might get a waiver to delay strt
7:36 am

If it helps, I knew a little girl who didn't start speaking properly until after speech therapy at aged four -she's now around 10 and you'd never know there had ever been a problem. It's just as if she babbled because she knew that her sister and parents could understand her. I know another little girl who was a selective mute, and now she talks (though is still painfully shy) - there is always hope.
7:37 am
Kallia
must have that one missing too matty..got all but one

are there any words starting with the opposite of in?
7:37 am
Jen
Jera, we had our little on in speech therapy at 2 (he could only speak like 10 words) and by the time he turned 3, he was talking at a 5 year old level
7:37 am
Jera
That does help, matty, thanks... also talking with movieman lifted my spirits a lot... he was not diagnosed until his 20's & he copes quite well
7:37 am
mamabook3
my boys (twins) have may b-days but were very premie...so we're gonna wait and start them at 6 yrs. I think it'll help them out
7:38 am
Jera
Your son is awesome, Jen, I'd never have guessed he'd ever had a problem.
7:38 am
Jen
{{{aw shucks!}}} Thanks Jera!
7:38 am
mamabook3
have you tried signs or pictures with him to help with the frustration?? I know it sure helped my little one
7:39 am
Jera
Do you need special permission for that in your state, mamabook? Here in Virginia we need a special waiver to delay starting kindergarten... we shall see if Gwyd qualifies
7:39 am
Jera
We are doing some sign language... what happens with pictures?
7:39 am
mattygroves
Still after the wh 5/20 that isn't a street walker...
7:40 am
mamabook3
nope. kindergarten isn't mandatory so as long as we start them the following year (in k or 1st)there's no problem.
7:40 am
Jera
Where are you, may I ask?
7:42 am
mamabook3
Illinois...take pics of everyday things...sippy cup, potty, plate of food, etc...laminate them and put magnets on the back of them. stick them on the refrigerator. then he can bring you the pictures when he wants something. you start to ask him to say the words when he brings them, and then phase them out as he can say them...works great for frustration.
7:42 am
Kallia
matty..it can be two words
7:42 am
Jera
That's very interesting... I have no training, which frustrates me as well...
7:43 am
mamabook3
pics are easier for children who have motor delays since signs can be difficult
7:43 am
mamabook3
i have a terrific speech therapist...and i've researched on the web
7:43 am
Jera
Oh his fine motor skills are excellent... loves to draw, work with clay... he can write all his capital letters & numbers!
7:44 am
mattygroves
Not the street walker (wh5/20) - I have that one.
7:44 am

it also works for little ones who are stubborn and don't want to do signs
7:44 am

Hurrah - got it. Driving me MAD
7:44 am
Kallia
matty Imeant the one yu are looking for can be two words
7:45 am

7:46 am

8:37 am
ch1212
Hi Mikey -- the 'theme' for the icons. Babbler puts up the short list on her profile page, but there is a longer list accessible through Angelsong's resource page. :) It's never an obligation, and in your case, I suspect many of the players would object if you removed you sweet face :)

For our Girl Scout Birthday Party in March, we got special permission to have candles in the Library, cake too, since food is usually not allowed. Hopefully we won't be too dry or windy mid-June. Of course we would obey fire bans, but the Girls would be disappointed...

8:51 am

I do consult the parents about what books the Girls are allowed to read. I send home a list & say pick one to read. Then they write a report about why they think it was banned, if they think it was a good decision, etc.
8:51 am
ch1212
:) I like that --- I could have one printed up with a list of banned books on the back of the shirt, like the kids do with graduating school classes. Yes, definitely.

Me too, jera. The ALA has good info on banned and challenged books back through the 1990's. I loved "Lord of the Flies" and couldn't believe there were places that banned it.
8:56 am
sandr
aargh - not officially banned then. The only books that get banned over here are a threat to the national security (allegedly) the spycatcher is the only one i can think of. The cather in the rye is a classis

I didn't much care for Lord of the Flies, as I was teased a lot as a child.

One of the most famous 'baning' was Farenheit 451 from that town in 1998. And of course, classics like Huckleberry Finn and Grapes of Wrath. Unbelievable. (Oh, for those who don't know, Farenheit 451 is a book about those who ban books!)
8:58 am
sandr
i can't imagine books getting removed from library shelves either - what a nightmare -
8:58 am
Jera
451 is one of my favorite books EVER!! Always makes me cry...
8:59 am

my god! you poor americans. It was written of its time when it was not considered politically incorrect, i think that people should take it in the spirit that it was meant. Wasn't Huck's friend black?
9:01 am

Ah, Orwell!

His other classic "Animal Farm" was considered a banned book in several communities. One of my teachers had us read it because of that status.
9:03 am

The only movie I suffered through (BNW) was where the savages were like nomadic cowboy punks. Very odd & not at all true to the book. Or even the spirit, IMHO.

what about to kill a mockingbird? they can't ban that one surely
9:05 am

9:08 am
musicmom
thanks for the link Jera.
9:09 am
sandr
books are essential - they teach you lots of things, stuff political correctness! there is a time and a place for getting rid of bigotry and prejudice but the written word is a recording of language at that point in time. The books should be read for there themes and perspectives, beautiful prose and the emotions they inspire - am gettting off me soap box now.
9:09 am
ch1212
Oh, I live in South Central Idaho, where the dominent religion is LDS, and Republicans are considered the "liberal" party :) ... The movie "Brokeback Mountain" didn't come to the theatre until MONTHS after it came out, and then only because it was nominated for so many awards.

mermaid79
I got that too... but I still show only 1 out of 2 for the corner N...
10:54 am
amandacath
For some wierd reason I knew that sh-word - I think it was on a vocabulary list in high school for a Shakespeare play, or maybe Chaucer, and somehow it stuck

10:54 am
LUCKY
Hey sprite how are you? have you finished yet?
10:55 am

Think of the Widow Tw....
11:00 am
FMitch
panto, short for pantomime and there is a pantomime charachter inthe grid today
11:01 am
amandacath
...and I propose that "enth" be a word - as in "to the enth degree"
11:01 am
Haz1558
But what panto does she appear in?
11:01 am
mattygroves
Who is always played by a man, cuz that's how Panto is (I loathe panto. Guess you had to grow up with it)
11:01 am
bendamalina
I guess I don't know anything about pantomime
11:01 am

A little boy asks his father, "Daddy, how was I born?" The father answers: "Well son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway. Your mom and I first got together in a chat room on AIM. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your mom and we met at a cyber-café. I upgraded my floppy to a stiffy and then your mother agreed to do a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a blessed little Pop-Up appeared and said: "You've got male!"

MikeyInBerlin
no; i'm sorry.....those clues really haven't helped me yet, for 'to5,12'.....i just can't figure what could go after it, in alphabetical order, considering the letter the preceding word ends with? :-/
1:00 pm
inge
Cedarone, you have me thoroughly confused.

to 5/12 sounds like singular of mice, to 6/21 gets a stick letter in next to last place,
1:02 pm
Minski
to5/12 - if you have the to6/21 remove the 2nd to last letter.
1:03 pm
Jera
Huzzah for Munner!
1:04 pm

1:05 pm
stidmama
oh and
YAY Munner!
1:05 pm
MikeyInBerlin
well, Inge; no.....the reason i didn't, is 'cos the word preceding ends in a letter near the end of the alphabet, and is only 1 letter shorter than the word i'm stuck on, so i can't see how anything could follow it, in alphabetical sequence, let alone anything that's like the clues i've seen here? :-/
1:05 pm
stidmama
bye inge...

GingerUK
Hi Everyone.. not sure I'll finish this one today but i can try :-)

testing...
1:23 pm
MikeyInBerlin
no, Atalante; and it looks like i'm not likely to now :-( i mean, the words do go in alphabetical order, descending.....and the previous word is only 1 letter shorter, starts with the same first 3 letters, then ends with the 2nd to last letter of the alphabet; so logically, i can't see *anything* that could possibly follow it!!! :-(
1:23 pm
MikeyInBerlin
i had serious connection problems with this page for several minutes there; and have only just now been able to do anything in it again, btw :-/
1:24 pm
baobab
any suggestions for the yo words?
1:24 pm
stidmama
hi daisy!
1:24 pm
MikeyInBerlin
i wish, baobab; but i can't even finish the 'to' section :-/
1:25 pm
MikeyInBerlin
still horribly stuck on 'to5,12' :-(
1:25 pm
baobab
:-/ it's tough today
1:25 pm
baobab
ahh, you have every rose has its "th***"?
1:25 pm

oh duh, that's th
1:25 pm
baobab
obviously, i'm not awake yet
1:25 pm
MikeyInBerlin
well, apparently it's easier for you, baobob; if you're already on the 'yo' section?
1:26 pm
baobab
no, i'm working haphazardly across sections, versus methodically through them
1:27 pm
MikeyInBerlin
oh, ok
1:28 pm
mary ellen
thank you baobab
1:30 pm
hetty
Mikey, the to5/12 is the name of a bird, common in North America. Think of ***head , then add the thirs and second vowels
1:30 pm
Minski
for the 2 long u words add a th word
1:30 pm
baobab
thanks hettie
1:31 pm
jetx
jetX is in the game!
1:31 pm
lenalu01
what do u mean add a th word?
1:31 pm
Minski
hint mikey..... it's no USE.
1:31 pm
MikeyInBerlin
ja, Minski; i tend to agree, at this point :-(
1:32 pm
Minski
no no look at the word I emphacized.
1:32 pm
MikeyInBerlin
there just isn't *anything* possible, from the letters surrounding it, that would create a word to follow the preceding one in aphabetical sequence.....and i'm ready to give up, i really am :-(
1:32 pm
baobab
wait wait mikey
1:32 pm
baobab
i'm getting the clues
1:33 pm
Minski
also try going across to the o on the left and not up to the diagonal o
1:33 pm
baobab
i now have 5 of the 6 to/s...just missing the last to4/4
1:33 pm
stidmama
okay Mikey, I think I have it. you need to move off the third letter of the word and put the last vowel in... then a curvy consonant, then the second vowel...
1:34 pm
stidmama
It's not a common word, and rarely used in this form anyway!
1:34 pm
baobab
mikey, do you have the to6/21 yet?
1:34 pm
hetty
Yes. And it looks loke a rodent with a wrong first letter
1:35 pm
Minski
one last hint....there is a nasty little mite that school age kids sometimes get in their hair and monkey pick off of each other. Change the 1st letter to a T.
1:35 pm
MikeyInBerlin
ach; well if you mean what is sometimes a vowel, Stidmama, then there is no 'curvy consonant' anywhere around it ? :-/
1:35 pm
stidmama
'mornin' hetty (what's left of it, anyway), how's the sunshine up your way?
1:35 pm
Minski
upside down n mikey
1:35 pm
baobab
take the o to the left of the t
1:36 pm
stidmama
to + upside down n + snake...
1:36 pm
baobab
tom is a cat, jerry is a ....
1:36 pm
baobab
but with a t
1:36 pm
FMitch
make sure you have the correct o - it has to be the one left of the t otherwise it wont work
1:36 pm
MikeyInBerlin
but Minski, that won't follow in alphabetical order?
1:36 pm
stidmama
*you can do it, Mikey*
1:37 pm
MikeyInBerlin
i'm just really ready to pack this in.....it's impossible :-(
1:37 pm
baobab
get the word, then worry about the alphabetical order!
1:37 pm
stidmama
*what baobab said*
1:37 pm
hetty
H Stid. Beautiful day and my husband is out pulling broom(e). I'm finding knoiwing how to help Mikey very frustrating. Wish I had your gift for zoning in on good clues.
1:37 pm
MikeyInBerlin
baobab; nothing i 've been trying works, so far; and if it's not in alphabetical order from the word above it, it won't go in there anyhow! :-/
1:37 pm
saffire
rhymes with mouse?
1:38 pm
MikeyInBerlin
i don't know; i'm starting to think i must be really stupid or something, if it's so obvious to you all, but none of this is making any sense to me? :-(
1:38 pm
baobab
it fits between to broadway award and what you do to a kid's hair
1:38 pm
stidmama
Mikey -- what creature do cat's like to chase and play with?
1:38 pm
CadFan
I'm sorry, but "owie" is TOO a word. :)
1:39 pm
stidmama
me too, CadFan! I use it every time I prune the roses!
1:39 pm
baobab
the first to6/21 is something that has the quality of a broadway award
1:39 pm
MikeyInBerlin
ja, stidmama; but this is a 'to' word.....'to5,12'?
1:39 pm
FMitch
to plus the 3 letter word in minskys post : hint mikey..... it's no USE
1:39 pm
stidmama
yes, Mikey -- put a t where the m usually goes. *just try it*
1:40 pm
Minski
don't worry about if it works, just enter it
1:40 pm
baobab
the second to 6/21 is what you do to a kid's head, and inbetween the 6 letter words are the broadway award and the sounds like a small rodent but isn't--does that help with word order??
1:40 pm
MikeyInBerlin
ja; so i understand, baobab.....but there's nothing in alphabetical sequence i've been able to see/find that fits that, there??? god; i'm ready to tear my hair out, i really am! :-/
1:40 pm
Minski
sometimes if I understand a hint but can't find the word on the grid I just enter it and then find it later.
1:40 pm
stidmama
zajewel... there there.
1:41 pm
MikeyInBerlin
ja, Minski; i would enter it, if i knew what it was? but i've even monkey typed everything possible :-(
1:41 pm
stidmama
Mikey -- there is NOTHING to understand... :-)
{{{HUG}}} breathe, extend and relax --- now, type!
1:41 pm
baobab
okay, list what you have mikey, we might be able to tell you where it fits in... that might be a better approach to problem solving in this case
1:41 pm
Dippnall
to+letter that's opp of me+ curly letter+2nd vowel?
1:41 pm
Minski
to + downward diagonally to the right + downward diagonally to the left + straight up
1:42 pm
zajewel
oh great bald Mikey - der vleiderm**** , drop the m and replace with a cross
1:42 pm
kkiln
can anyone help me with el4/4 or el 5/12?
