Your g-word is probably the right one, Sprite. The German word is "gewiss" from "wissen"=to know. I can't remember the exact process, but alot of the germanic words that mutated into english ones changed the ge prefix to a y, and that's how, through some sort of mistaken etymology, we ended up with things like "Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe"
