sprite - you're right - a menorah - described in exodus has 7 lights. the hanukah (let's not even get started on spelling ;)) menorah is more properly called a hanukiah - or chanukiah - it has 8 candles, one for each day, plus a 9th that holds the "shamash" - the candelt that lights the rest of them - an oil chanukiah will have 8 wells for oil & wicks plus one candle holder.
