Haz1558
Hello Odin - missed you the past couple of mornings.
3:15 am
Odin
My mother is in the hospital with high blood pressure and we all took turns staying with her as she has Alzheimer's and is extremely disoriented. an't rely on the overworked staff to watch her 24-7.
3:16 am
Haz1558
That explains it. It can't be easy for you to cope with that situation.
3:17 am
jean1953
fireworks:)
3:17 am
Haz1558
Well done jean!
3:17 am
Odin
It can be frustrating as she is unaware she is even in the hospital. We answer the same questions hundreds of times a day...but the good news is she may be discharged today and once she returns home most of the disorientation is gone.
3:18 am
jean1953
thank you Haz and Odin:)
3:19 am
Haz1558
It seems to be a common thing that taking patients from their home environment causes real problems. Hopefully she'll be better once home. But the answering of the questions - patience needed in abundance!
3:20 am
Odin
That is true Haz and thanks for noticing I was missing in action.
3:21 am

3:22 am

thanks Haz and you too
3:22 am
Haz1558
Odin, do you have brothers and sisters?
3:22 am
Odin
One sister who shares the responsibilities so my Dad can get some rest.
3:23 am
Haz1558
That's good - I have a friend coping alone with two elderly aunts who are deteriorating mentally. It's not easy for her.
3:24 am
Odin
That's tough. Being responsibile for both of them must be exhausting and is a huge task.
3:25 am
Haz1558
The two aunts live separately, my friend has a full-time job and tries to keep them going as well. One has taken to calling the police when she can't find things.....
3:26 am
Odin
She certainly has her hands full. I have my sister to help and so far no alls to the police or wandering about.
3:27 am
Haz1558
Well, I hope the situation with your mother improves and remains manageable for everyone.
3:28 am
Odin
Thanks Haz...once home she will be much better.

I suppose if you don't come up with the goods I can always write to David Beckham - looks like he'll have some cash to spare. Mind you, Victoria will have a whole new set of shops to visit....
3:31 am
Odin
Isn't that the truth...they were on tv last night and she seems to emit shopper from each and every breath she takes....he's certainly got $$$$$$$$!
3:32 am

3:41 am

Today is Einstein's birthday. He would have been 107.
Few people remember that the Nobel Prize winner married his
cousin, Elsa Lowenthal, after his first marriage dissolved in 1919.
He stated that he was attracted to Elsa because she was well endowed,
and postulated that if you are attracted to women with large breasts,
the attraction is stronger if there is a DNA connection.
This came to be known as Einstein's Theory of Relative Titty.
Oh be quiet - - - I didn't write this I just passed it on!

A big Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Mexico.
While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served
at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful.
He asked the waiter, "What is that you just served?"
The waiter replied, "Ah senor, you have excellent taste!
Those are called Cojones de Toro, Bull's testicles
from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!"
The cowboy said, "What the heck, bring me an order."
The waiter replied, I am so sorry senor. There is
only one serving per day because there is only one
bull fight each morning. If you come early tomorrow
and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy."
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order,
and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day.
After a few bites, and inspecting his platter, he called to the
waiter and said, "These are delicious, but they are much, much
smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday."
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied sorrowfully,
"Si, Senor. Sometimes it is the bull that wins.

Explaining the Buffalo Theory
"Well ya see Buddy, it's like this....A herd of buffalo can only move
As fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the
Slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This
Natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed
And health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of
The weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only
Operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we
All know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and
Weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer
Eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more
Efficient machine.
That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Many aspects of human sexuality are very puzzling.
Take celibacy. This can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed
by environmental factors.
While attending a Marriage Encounter Weekend, Bill and Mary listened
to the instructor declare 'It is essential that husbands and wives know
the things that are important to each other. He addressed the men.
"Can you each name and describe your wife's favourite flower ?"
Bill leaned over, touched Mary's arm gently and whispered, "Self

Paddy says to Mick, "get in there and steal a bus so we can drive home and I'll stay out here and look out for the police."

Eventually Paddy sticks his head around the door, and sees Mick running from bus to bus looking very worried."What in all hell are you doing, Mick, get a move on!"

My mother was a fanatic about public restrooms. When I was a little girl,
she'd take me into the stall, show me how to wad up toilet paper and wipe
the seat. Then she'd carefully lay strips of toilet paper to cover the seat.
Finally, she'd instruct, "Never, NEVER sit on a public toilet seat.
Then she'd demonstrate "The Stance," which consisted of balancing over the
toilet in a sitting position without actually letting any of your flesh make contact with the toilet seat. That was a long time ago. Now, in m y "mature" years, "The Stance"
is excruciatingly difficult to maintain.
When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line of women, so you
smile politely and take your place. Once it's your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors. Every stall is occupied.
Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the woman leaving the stall. You get in to find the door won't latch. It doesn't matter.
The dispenser for the modern "seat overs" (invented by someone's Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty. You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there were one, but there isn't - so you carefully but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR!), yank down your pants, and assume "The Stance."
In this position your aging, toneless thigh muscles begin to shake. You'd love to sit down, but you certainly hadn't taken time to wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold "The Stance."
To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what you
discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser. In your mind, you
can hear your mother's voice saying, "Honey, if you had tried to
clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!"
Your thighs shake more.
You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday the one that's still in your purse. That would have to do. You crumple it in the puffiest way possible. It is still smaller than your thumbnail.
Someone pushes open your stall door because the latch doesn't work.
The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck in front of your chest,
and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet.
"Occupied!" you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor, lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the TOILET SEAT. It is wet of course.
You bolt up, knowing all too well that it's too late. Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper -- not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try.
You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because, you're certain, her bare bottom never touched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, "You just don't KNOW what kind of diseases you could get."
By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a firehose that somehow sucks everything down with such force that you grab onto the toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too. At that point, you give up.
You're soaked by the spewing water and the wet toilet seat. You're exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks. You can't figure out how to operate the faucets with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women, still waiting. You are no longer able to smile politely at them.
A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe. ( Where was that when you NEEDED it?? ) You yank thepaper from your shoe, plunk it the woman's hand and tell her warmly,
"Here, you just might need this."
As you exit, you spot your hubby, who has long since entered, used and left the men's restroom. Annoyed, he asks, "What took you so long, and why is your purse hanging around your neck?". . .This is dedicated to women everywhere who deal with a public restroom.
(rest??? you've got to be kidding!!). It finally explains to the men what really does take us so long. It also answers their other commonly asked question about why women go to the restroom in pairs It's so the other gal can hold the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the door

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.
After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done.
The monsignor replied, " When I am worried about getting nervous on
the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. If I start to get
nervous, I take a sip."
So next Sunday he took the monsignor's advice.
At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink.
He proceeded to talk up a storm.
Upon his return to his office after the mass, he found the following
note on the door:
1) Sip the vodka, don't gulp.
2) There are 10 commandments, not 12.
3) There are 12 disciples, not 10.
4 )Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.
5) Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.
6) We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the late J.C.
7) The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as Daddy, Junior
and the Spook.
8) David slew Goliath, he did not kick the crap out of him.
9) When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey, don't
say he was stoned off his ass.
10) We do not refer to the cross as the "Big T."
11) When Jesus broke the bread at the last supper he said, "take this
and eat it for it is my body." He did not say " Eat me".
12) The Virgin Mary is not called " Mary with the Cherry"
13) The recommended grace before a meal is not: Rub-A-Dub-Dub

This Irish guy shows up in a pub one day and orders
three pints of Guinness. He takes sips from each glass until they are empty and calls the bartender for three more. The bartender says, "hey, pal, I don't mind bringing one at a time, then they'll be fresh and cold."
"Nah... ahm preferrin' that ya bring 'em three at a time. You see, me and me two brothers would meet at a pub and drink and have good times. Now one is in Australia, the other in Canada and I'm here. We agreed before we split up that we'd drink this way to each other's honor."
"Well," says the bartender, "that's a damn good sentimental thing to do. I'll bring the pints as you ask."
Well, time goes on and the Irishman's peculiar habit is known and accepted by all the pub regulars. One day, the Irishman comes in and orders only two pints. A hush falls over the pub. Naturally, everyone figures something happened to one of the brothers. A bunch of the regulars corner the bartender and finally persuade him to find out what happened.
With a heavy heart, the bartender brings the two
pints and says, "Here's your pints... and let me offer
my sincerest condolences. What happened?"
The Irishman looks extremely puzzled for a moment.
When the light comes on in his head, he starts laughing. "No, no! 'Tis nothing like that. You see,
I've given up drinking for Lent."

THE POTATO
Well, Girl Potato and Boy Potato
had eyes for each other,
and finally they got married,
and had a little sweet potato,
which they called 'Yam.'
Of course, they wanted the best for Yam.
When it was time,
they told her about the facts of life.
They warned her about going out
and getting half-baked,
so she wouldn't get accidentally mashed,
and get a bad name for herself like
'Hot Potato,'
and end up with a bunch of Tater Tots.
Yam said not to worry,
no Spud would get her into
the sack and make a rotten potato out of her!
But on the other hand
she wouldn't stay home
and become a Couch Potato either.
She would get plenty of exercise
so as not to be skinny
like her Shoestring cousins.
When she went off to Europe,
Mr. and Mrs. Potato told Yam
to watch out for the hard-boiled guys from Ireland.
And the greasy guys from France
called the French Fries.
And when she went out west,
to watch out for the Indians
so she wouldn't get scalloped.
Yam said she would stay on
the straight and narrow and wouldn't associate
with those high class Yukon Golds,
or the ones from the other side of the tracks
who advertise their trade
on all the trucks that say,
'Frito Lay.'
Mr. and Mrs. Potato sent Yam to Idaho PU.
(that's Potato University)
so that when she graduated
she'd really be in the Chips.
But in spite of all they did for her,
one-day Yam came home and announced
she was going to marry Tom Brokaw.
Tom Brokaw!
Mr. and Mrs. Potato were very upset.
They told Yam she couldn't
possibly marry Tom Brokaw
because he's just.......
Are you ready for this?
Are you sure?

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this
There is a two-letter word that perhaps
has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is "UP."
It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.
And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.
We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.
One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so............ Time to shut UP.....!
Oh...one more thing:
What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

A touching elephant story
While on holiday in Kenya and walking through the bush a man comes across
an elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.
The elephant seems distressed so the man approaches very carefully. He gets
down on one knee and inspects the bottom of the elephant's foot only to
find a large thorn deeply embedded.
As carefully and as gently as he can he removes the thorn and the elephant
gingerly puts its foot down. The elephant turns to face the man and with a
rather stern look on its face, stares at him. For a good ten minutes the
man stands frozen - thinking of nothing else but being trampled.
Eventually the elephant turns and walks away.
For many years after, the man often remembers
and ponders the events of that day.
Years later the man is walking through the zoo with his son. As they
approach the elephant enclosure, one of the elephants turns and walks over
to where they are standing at the rail. It stares at him and the man can't
help wondering if this is the same elephant.
The man climbs tentatively over the railing and makes his way into the
enclosure. He walks right up to the elephant and stares back in wonder.
Suddenly the elephant wraps its trunk around one of the man's legs and
swings him wildly back and forth along the railing, instantly killing him.
Probably not the same elephant.

I have tried to babble from China for three days and never finished. China will not let me open Lickety's list so I'm not able to find the final words that I am missing ... wastes lots of my time here. I could not find one at Babbler's annonymous or Angelsong. Is there another somewhere? I think the censors do not like the word lists. Can anyone copy Lickety's and email the day's list to me? Is that something that can even be done?

sorry, dog was in my lap. Seems kinda warm for you back there -- don't you normally have snow this time of year? (I have about an hour before my kid gets off the bus)
4:55 pm
Mom
We usually are in the 20's to low 30's for daytime highs. We have had but one snow fall and it came at rush hour one day and was completely gone by 11:00 a.m.

Can anyone help with the ce 5/12?
4:56 pm
stidmama
wow. I bet your plants and birds are really confused... I have all kinds of little birds I don't usually see at my feeders because it's so cold. Your aunt has the right idea... while I don't like So. Cal much, I wouldn't mind a quick trip at the moment!
4:57 pm

The bad thing about it being so warm here is we haven't have a good killing frost. It is a roller coaster ride for us. One week it is in the 30's the next week it is in the 50's. I am sure we will pay for it soon.

7:34 pm
Ping
i'm already down to 12 - of course those 12 could be tough
7:35 pm
Jacula
phan - The funeral service was a humanist one (non-religious), conducted by a registrar who knew him personally. I don't think I've ever been to a service/ceremony where people laughed as much as they cried as the deceased's life exploits, including selling tyres to Arabs, were recounted. It was a lovely, honest service that ended with the words, 'Now get down to the pub and drink to him!'
7:35 pm
lbdawger
a couple odd ones, but most of these we've seen before
7:36 pm
lbdawger
Jac~my kind of funeral. a loving memorial! cheers!
7:36 pm

That reminds me of a joke Paul told me earlier.... A little boy was on a nudist beach with his parents. He wandered off for a while and then came back saying, 'Mommy. I've seen ladies with much bigger boobies than yours!' 'The bigger they are, the dumber they are!' said his mother. He wandered off again. On his return he said, 'Mommy. I've seen men with much bigger dinglers than Daddy's!' 'The bigger they are, the dumber they are,' said his mother. The lad goes walkabout again... He returns. 'Mommy! I know what you mean now. I've just seen Daddy talking to a realy, really DUMB lady and the more he talked to her, the dumber he got!'
