My friends son had to ring her whilst IN CLASS as the teacher had left the room and he was being bullied. Turns out he was punched so hard he had a bruise. But this kid had to use his phone to call his mum to call the school. It is disgusting. He got suspended for 2 days for swearing at a teacher (proofed as here say) These kids get nothing for hitting him

I know... the teachers here anyway...refuse to do anything about bullying...their attitude is "don't do it" and instead of being adults and actually intervening they are completely putting the responsibility of stopping it upon the kids... they require "prep time" and so therefore cannot be on the school yard to supervise except 5 mins before the bell ( mind lunch time is from 11:30 to 12:15 and the kids who eat at school are outside unsupervised from 11:50 to 12:10

i have some friends that are teachers. from the amount of work they do outside school hours on prep and marking and the constant increase in class sizes, they get a bit of a raw deal. then there is the issue of lawsuits. they walk on eggshells all the time because all it takes is an accusation of touching a student to put them on administrative leave. i'd say a good bit of the trouble lies within families where parenting is left to the tv and the general tone of the culture. life is getting meaner and it isn't all the teacher's fault.

i ride public transit every day and i am stuck with a busload of high school kids. the youth culture has change drastically. court dates and arrests are signs of social achievement. violence is glorified, planned and routine among both genders. it isn't just the teachers, it is a cultural problem and mandated curicula hasn't done a damn thing to fix it. in fact the harris innovation of hamstringing the teachers to the three 'r's has left whole segments of the school population out to twist in the wind. it works fine for the bulk of average kids but abandons the under and over achievers. ain't no perfect system but the problems run deep and wide.

well i finished with school in 79 and there was no such thing as free form spelling. and from my experience in university and working with folks from two universities the literacy level is not improving. some of the biggest mandatory first year classes are remedial grammar and spelling.

In university I can't submit anything non-electronically. Most people don't even write out their notes...penmanship is unnecessary, apparently. The lack of reading bothers me much mroe though...reading is pretty basic. Even an attempt would be good.

i was in 11th grade, the very first year that calculators were allowed in a math class. my folks bought me a texas instruments calculator the size of a brick that cost over $100. of course i promptly disassembled it. i completed the yeardoing the figures on paper and finished near the top of the class. i never did tell the folks about all the bits of calculator in my locker.
