lill, he has Asperger's Syndrome, he is 8 years old, and it is just dawning on him how hard it will be for him during his childhood. It depresses him greatly cause he just doesn't know how to cope with it... YET!

As an adult, he will thrive and have a fabulous life, but as a child, Asperger's is very hard on them... the whole socialisation depends on if you live of die in school, especially high school.

yes lill, I remember... I am on that school all the time to stop my son being bullied. It makes a big difference if they are not feeling so threatened.
Some kids can handle it (like my daughter... she is very straight forward and tells them where to get off!! and they leave her alone), but my son sits with his head down as they hurt him and pretends he feels no pain cause he thinks that they will leave him alone if he doesn't move

my nephew has autism very high functioning he was home schooled for several years the school system didnt know how to deal with him academically he was great but the whole atmosphere was too much stimulation for him. he's back at middle school now 14 yrs old and doing very well. he still has problems because like your son he knows that he has difficulties the other kids dont have but he is much happier being with his,peers. fingers crossed for your son

bethn... I asked him if he wanted to be home schooled, but he would miss his 'friends'... he knows he needs to be around kids to learn how to be like 'ordinary' people.
He is so smart! his IQ is way way high and got top 1% in the state for a government skills test in year 3.
The other kids who are a**holes tell him his a stupid and retarded and a psycho... it is starting to wash over him. He needs to be around people to learn about people

our biggest problem is he has a baby phobia he is overly sensitive to high noises when he sees them it can trigger a melt down so school (no babies) is his only outlet. no restaurants ,stores, anyolace babies maybe. they are having a hard time finding someone to help him with this

My kids are with other kids more now than when they were in school...in more social situations than sitting in a classroom, and exposed to all ages. I'm definitely not knocking the school system. Just pointing out that there's a really bad misconception of home schoolers as unsocialized. We all joke about the "s" word.."what about socialization?!!" Home schooling is what you make of it. Do you have good services available in Australia? It's hard enough finding them in my own country..I don't know anything about others!
