there was a picture series today in the paper, this guy fell into his own bear pit/trap and the bear nearly killed him... the other hunters just ran away and left him there.

Herin. First of all. I don't hunt. I fish. Caych and release only. BUT, I don't really have too much problem with hunters. Except the bear baiting ones. When they do hunt, it's way out in the wild. The ones that are killed around here are the dangerous/nuisance ones. They are almost always killed by someone protecty their animals or themselves.

I'm not sure if the same holds for Australia as here but over here we have local dog wardens attached to local councils - they would have powers of seizure if the dog is a stray. The USPCA (or RSPCA on mainland) have powers to advise, but they would need police warrant to seize an animal. There's no guarantee of rehoming with either.
