Except when I happened to glance out the window: where the day before had stood a gloriously fat-fruited and foliaged fig tree was now stripped to the bare twigs; not a sign in the garden that there had ever been anything living there above grass level. Damn. Once in 12 years we get Weather here. But then it's a doozy.

re ruru's climate report - true, except for San Francisco proper. Usually cool year round with some uncomfortable (Ahem! she coughed) two or three-day 'heat'waves' in early July or late September. West - it was me. I? No, me. We had Weather in San Francisco. Something that doesn't happen often. Central feature: winds at 75mph that caught at least three megaton 18-wheelers broadside and tipped them over on their sides on the highway. And our poor fig tree -- the day before a full-foliaged fruitbearer -- yesterday morn, a barebarknaked bunch of sticks. Gone though. The last time this sort of thing happened was 12 years ago.

The disconnect is a problem though. I have a sweet little boy in my practice, age 5, with Asperger Syndrome--very anxious and with trouble socializing, yet reading at 4th grade level. He started reading at 2 1/2 yrs. He fascinates me yet the school system cannot meet all of his needs.

Obviously, there is a way to say things and a way not to, but it is important that people be given the responsibility for their own behavior. We've been using "Parenting Teens With Love & Logic" in our house--and I've found the principles from the book work at the office and with my spouse, as well.
