i have rarely come across rattlesnakes in the wild and i have lived in the desert my whole life. i trail ride my horse through the desert (although one of them was bitten by a rattler once) and hike/play in what is a rapidly diminishing desert space around the city. rattlesnakes are quite good you see, they shake their booties to let you know that they are there.
