Sam long story short. New house doesn't have Telstra lines (which is the standard in houses) Instead we have optus which there is limited carriers that piggy back off it. Optus is very very very very expensive. You need to pay for house line rental as well. its about $109 alone

He was running in his new rain boots, and tripped on a gravel path. His nose looked like a starwberry for a while but is just scratched and a bit bruised now and he can breathe through it no problem, but he also scraped the heel of his hand and of course keeps bumping it. A Tylenol helped this morning when he was complaining about the nose being sore, and I'm sure the one I just gave him will help in short order.

my parents' new(ish) insert is nice, but it only works when there is power!!! I prefer a good cast-iron stove over anything, you can cook on it in a pinch and they're pretty efficient.

Hanging in there, Trif! Typical day in chaos. The "big event" was that Walter was running in his new rain boots, and tripped on a gravel path. His nose looked like a starwberry for a while but is just scratched and a bit bruised now and he can breathe through it no problem, but he also scraped the heel of his hand and of course kept bumping it. But mostly cheery and high as a kite, and in bed now, and quite so probably asleep.

yes, but it is bigger than you might think of - it's about 17 feet by 27 feet. it was a construction accident gone wrong, (misplaced septic) and we said, rather than fill in the hole, let's line it and make a pond....choas ensued.

big pond version of tennis ball - same effect -
There is a fairly easy trick to keeping a hole open in your pond. Put as large in diameter of a log as your pond can handle. They don't have to be long, just big and round. The larger diameter the better as long as they are still floating. More than one is great if you have them and they will fit.

Why does this work? As the pond freezes the ice will push against the logs and gradually move them downward in the pond. Each day as the sun warms up the log the hole will open up again and most nights it will not shut completely. Each morning you just need to pop the log with a pole or sledge to make sure it is free and that is all you need to do. I have been using this trick for over 40 years and it was taught to me by an old rancher in the mountains of Colorado.
