we decided to grow our own stuff this year as like you said it is so expensive for nice veg. As a guide a single plant will be happy in a 9 to 12 inch pot. Its never too late - start them off in small pots on a south facing window sill, Once the first pair of true leaves appear start taking them outside, then once they are big enough to handle transfer to a bigger pot.

i follow my dad's recipe for pickling - peel onions/shallots leave overnight in salted water, pickle in malt viengar with dried chillies and leave for at least 3 weeks but 5 is better and ones that are 18months old blow your socks off

Also keep them in a dark place. I tend to fill the jars, jiggle it all around with a knitting needle and then leave for a while and come back to check before i seal them. Old instant 200g coffee jars are a good size. No heat at all - some folks do stuff to the vinegar but i find that just makes the onions soggy

this is my second serious car accident within two years. it is starting to feel like a habit and i am tired of it.

oh I had a dilly! Planned to go to the car dealer via ferry -- while on the boat realised I'd forgotten my purse. Had to turn around and go back to get the purse but had no money to pay the ferry fare. Was told I'd have to leave the car and go as a foot passenger, find someone to take me home. No cell phone (in my missing purse). No nearby friends. Then a guy I'd never seen before poked his head in and said he would pay my fare! What a wonderful surprise! I gave him my phone number and the gal at the ticket booth said ok, so I got on the ferry and got home. Then he phoned and said to send the cheque ($36!) to his mother in Ontario! I'll be posting this tale for the Sunday Grateful icon theme!
