if it has laces and is the standard ortho flat shoe, you can take it off and it might help you to put heat on it for 20 minutes at a time to help reduce the swelling (when the foot is elevated above your heart)

I always found that using the 2 crutches under the one arm worked best for stairs myself. If I threw a crutch down, by the time I got down there I usually didn't want to bend over and pick it up again (I'm a bit lazy when hobbling around)
