3:38 am

hey my dear friend :) *hugs back* Night was ok, and the girl (and boy) had a fun prank day.
3:38 am
grannyrose

so glad on both accounts.
3:39 am
sprite

and you? How was your day and how are you feeling tonight?
3:39 am
grannyrose

doing well. pottered around and did little chores today. with lots of rest in between. xoxox
3:40 am
sprite

wow well done!
3:44 am
grannyrose

watching the Anzac service at Lone Pine. omg those poor turkish soldiers, that marching step would be a killer on the knees.
3:46 am
grannyrose

btw, easy peasy grid tonight.
3:46 am
sprite

looks like, indeed. Flew past halfway without even noticing
3:48 am
grannyrose

i greyed the top row in the first five minutes.
3:48 am
sprite

good job!
3:53 am
sprite

phantom: ottoman. And several babblets too that are almost there.
3:54 am
grannyrose

and motto.... i nearly went nuts with that one.... lol...
3:54 am
sprite

yeah that one too. Though it is compensated to a point by another similar word being valid.
3:55 am
grannyrose

because i was looking for motto, i nearly missed that one. it was a real palm-head moment.
3:56 am
sprite

ah, I know those moments. Nothing like babble to keep us humble, hm? :)
3:58 am
grannyrose

absolutely....
4:01 am
sprite

ah, dutch for aunt is in the grid... not valid, of course. 'Tante'.
4:01 am
grannyrose

valid word is close to that
4:02 am
sprite

it is funny, it appears in the english books of Faye Kellerman. Because she uses some Yiddish and German too.
4:02 am
sprite

yeah, found that one, thanks :)
4:03 am
grannyrose

thought provoking final words from the major-general leading the service. he said, the bones of our ancestors lie beneath the ground here. where ever you walk, tread so4ly.
4:04 am
sprite

yeah
4:06 am
grannyrose

sprite, why the physical need to fight? what is wrong with words? they don't kill.
4:07 am
sprite

world peace is my deepest prayer and wish. But it all begins close to home.
4:08 am
grannyrose

if all the men said no to violence....how wonderful would it be. and yes ISIS springs to mind. but fighting in defence is surely okay?
4:09 am
sprite

debatable. Because what is considered defence? Some will say it is defence to strike back when someone hits them. Others will say it is defence to kill people who don't believe the things you do.
4:10 am
grannyrose

yes, that would have to be delineated for sure.
4:12 am
sprite

and then there is the matter of how much fighting is ok. It should be either equal to the offence... or minimal just to counter the attack... and some people will strike back as hard as they can. Plus, think of all the family feuds etc. The one side's defence is the other's offence, and so it goes on and on and on.
4:14 am
sprite

found the F7. Could have sworn that was spelled with a ph.
4:14 am
grannyrose

i hear you, sweetie. us women must get together and sort out our men folk.not you and i, but women all over the world. stand firm, say no. that is inappropriate.
4:15 am
grannyrose

alternative spelling
4:15 am
sprite

mwah, I don't agree with you there. Women can be incredibly backstabbing and vicious, and they are known to be merciless killers too.
4:16 am
grannyrose

hmmmm, yeah.
4:16 am
grannyrose

those ones can take a back row... lolol
4:20 am
sprite

lolol
4:21 am
grannyrose

to be sedated with massive doses of valium and other mind-altering drugs...
4:21 am
sprite

and even ghandi seems to have beaten his wife. I truly feel that we all should try to give peace a chance at home. Start in our personal lives. That way, we begin to understand the frictions and tensions and powergames that create conflict, small and large.
4:25 am
grannyrose

absolutely, sprite. but as you know, violence begets violence. and it is only people like you and i who strive to break the chain.
4:26 am
grannyrose

as you kn ow, i have tried hard not to emulate my mother to the extent i very rarely wear a skirt or dress.
4:27 am
sprite

in my own life, I often see how complicated it is. For instance, to be at peace with my son, I should always let him step on me. Standing up for myself creates arguments. As does parenting... showing and telling him what to do and what not.
4:29 am
grannyrose

i know, dear love. and you MUST do that... or he will learn women cannot/will not react to protect themselves.

exactly. So it is complicated. I am convinced I have to show and tell Tim what is socially acceptable and what not. And terrorists are convinced they have to show and tell the world what to believe, or in which way, etc.

For ww2 vets that is
5:38 am

crossy, DH and i are both puzzled. they have incorporated poppies into this celebraion. before this year, poppies were only associated with remembrance day
5:40 am

today they commemorated all war vets. including vietnam, korea, faulklans, aghanistan...
5:40 am

9:32 am
freckledcat

You are probably right, Molly, but as the mother there wasn't much to laugh at at the time. My son told me lately that he is glad now because dyslexics are good at solving problems and that is what he does for a living--in the IT department.
9:35 am
MollyL

One of my friends who is dyslexic works for NASA. When he was a kid, dyslexia was not as well known and dealt with as it is now.
9:43 am
freckledcat

They are very smart usually. It was like that for my son too. They were just realizing this was the problem, not lack of attention or goofing off. He had a few teachers who saw the problem. He was the first child in his school to have a laptop in class. It was not a laptop as we know them now but the spell checker was a big help plus for some reason it helped him express himself better.
9:48 am
wvteach

They are frequently made fun of, bullied in school. Many parents don't want their child lsabelled because of the problems that can bring. Kids don't want to be singled out to receive the help they need. I was in special ed since the early 60s and, unfortunately, this has always been a problem in getting the kids the help that they need to receive
9:49 am

I'm very thankful for the teachers he had and for the good outcome.

9:51 am

That is well
9:52 am
wvteach

I know that I am overly sensitive to this because of many years of watching "my" students being made fun of by others. Too mnay times things are said that are hurtful to others even though they might not be meant in that weay.
9:53 am
freckledcat

It is good to see that you are doing well too, Crossy.
9:55 am

My mind will stiil race ahead of thigs and a jumbled word will look right on the first pass, but as molly said, many dyslexics go on to full, productive carears

was just reading the chog -- there is an eye condition involving muscular control that exhibits some of the same symptoms as dyslexia. People cannot track across a page and keep losing their place while trying to read, mixing up columns when trying to add , subtract, multiply or divide, transposing letters when writing. Fortunately it is easly cured with a period of regular eye exercises (easily diagnosed too, when you know what to look for!)
10:06 am
freckledcat

We actually tried that too.
10:08 am
cybernan

do you mean the eye exercises, fcat? - did you use the swinging ball?
10:12 am
freckledcat

My son is 37 now so it was a while ago and I don't remember exactly what we did but they were tracking exercises. We found an optometrist who was endeavoring to help these children.
10:14 am
freckledcat

They didn't help him.
10:14 am
cybernan

yes -- that's what happened to us too -- all 3 kids! Had to suspend one of those red white and blue rubber balls at eye level and have them try to track it swinging back and forth in various directions while keeping their heads absolutely still.
10:15 am
cybernan

I liked that one better than having them track the concentric circles on a moving card because I could stand opposite and actually see what their eyes were doing -- fortunately, it did work for our kids

I believe wvteach was referring to all disablilties. As a mother of a developmentally disabled man I find all remarks about disabilties harmful and hurtful.
11:50 am

I made a comment about myself. People who have disabilities are often the first to make jokes about themselves. I have seen it time and time again.

I haven't, ru.

no.. I worked with the kids as a senior and did a newspaper where the kids did Art, and poems and writing that was distributed in my school for the regular students

i need to cook chicken for use in a casserole. i hate bland chicken but poaching is the only was i can think o f to do this (skinless meat). anyone have any methods for seasoning and poaching? or other recommendations?
1:35 pm

poaching is like making chichen soup. I would put in salt and pepper and some onions
1:36 pm
bichon

the chicken will absorb the salt and pepper from thewater

and garlic.........LOTS of garlic

1:44 pm
jrs

Though I mostly lurk, I couldn't resist leaping into a discussion of cooking. Don't waste chicken breasts on soup-there's more flavour for that in the dark meat and bones. For the breasts, saute some chopped onions and garlic. Add whatever other veg you like (mushrooms, leeks, celery, tomatoes, peppers). When they've softened, add some tomato sauce (optional), water, white wine-just enough to barely cover the breasts which you now add to cover the veg in a single layer. cover tightly and simmer till the chicken is done, probably about 30 min. This iss essentially poaching, but more flavoourful than using just water. Bon appetit!
1:45 pm
bichon

One good thing about using breasts for soub is that there's less fat.
1:45 pm
sammysmom

sounds wonderful jrs

ty for the advice,jrs/
1:53 pm
jrs

Thanks, Sammysmom. It's very adaptble, too. for pseudo-French, leave out the garlic and tomato sauce, using just mushrooms, leeks & white wine. For pseudo-cacciatore, use just onions, garlic, and mushrooms. Substitute some tomatoe paste for the sauce & thin with white wine (and a little brandy, if you feel like it). For pseudo-Chinese, leave off the tomatoes altogether, bot sauce and veg. Substitute soy sauce to taste for the tomato sauce, rice wine, if you have it for white wine, and add just a touch of sesame oil. For pseudo-Hungarian, leave off the garlic and all other veg except tomatoes and peppers. Stir in LOTS of paprika, use water only, no wine. Enjoy!

2:18 pm
72 Temple Owl

yes, the path to becoming a cook is about what goes with what and basic techniques. i am watching a guy friend trying to use his familys recipes, but he has no technique.
2:32 pm
MollyL

I agree about wasting chicken breasts in soup. Soup is for dark meat and other parts of chicken.
2:35 pm
MollyL

And don't use frozen vegetables in crock pot recipes unless you are aiming for a pot of mush. Slow cooker, crock pot recipes are for fresh vegetables.
2:37 pm
jrs

Agreed, TO, but don't you think that a sense of what goes with what trumps technique? All the technique in the world won't help if a cook can't taste in his/her head what tastes well with what.
2:38 pm
72 Temple Owl

i do not like dark meat. i will add some thigh meat.but i just do not like dark. i do not like anything fatty. just taste
2:40 pm
72 Temple Owl

well, i agree but when tried and true recipes don't work, it has to be technique. Or ingredients.,don't you think?
2:40 pm
jrs

Hi, Molly! You're right about the frozen veg, but the recipes i was outlining will cook in 1/2-3/4 hrs. And TO, maany people don't like dark meat. Those recipes work very well with chicken breasts.
2:46 pm
72 Temple Owl

i would love to have some crock pot recipes. i think, way back when there was a bulletin board, that we posted recipes there.
2:49 pm
jrs

I think that if tried and true recipes don't work, it may be that the person writing out the recipe may have omitted some key steps that seem second nature, so actually, the recipe is more of a guideline than a true recipe. For example, in the Hungarian preparation below, you don't have to tell a Hungarian cook that lots of paprika means 2-3 tbsp if it's actually measured out, or that the paprika has to be added to a dry pan to coat the veg, and that the water only comes later. This isn't really technique, but rather just knowledge handed down from one cook to another. Technique certainly makes a cook's life easier, but I don't know that I'd call this sort of knowledge technique.

Sorry, TO, but I have no crock pot recipes. It's one area of cooking that I've never explored. My niece, a college junior recently acqured a slow cooker. I foound a great cookbook for her put out by Cook's Illustrated that describes all sorts of techniques for not turning your food into mush. I'll try to find the link, if you'd like.

Slow cooker recipes are good if you use tougher cuts of meat that need to tenderize over time, and fresh vegetables. Putting a fast cooking meat like chicken in a slow cooker for six hours or more will give you mushy meat. Same goes for frozen vegetables that only require a short cooking time.
