12:11 am
Tolinya

<laughing at myself>

I'm outties...see ya'll tomarra...

POOF
12:15 am
Larry

Could they put any more vowels in here??? LOL
12:16 am
boatierra

Talk about vowels, my best so far is a 5 for 22.
12:18 am
Larry

me too.
12:19 am
Christine

Time to go read the Tim Russert book.

17 for 181 with the best a 6 for 30.
12:19 am
Maudie

I have a 6 for 39 :)
12:20 am
boatierra

A 6 for 39? Outstanding, you go girl :)
12:22 am
bulldog

This grid doesn't look too promising
12:23 am
Riff

no it doesn't
12:24 am
Riff

no IKEA haha
12:24 am
runningforhome

The stats are in, and it's official: this is the worst grid ever.
12:25 am
boatierra

Ya, that was the first one I tried too. I knew it would not accept it, but you never know. I'm going to an IKEA job fair this Sat. So when I saw it, made me smile.
12:26 am
boatierra

Must go to bed. 28/231 , and my best its still 5 for 22.
12:27 am
bulldog

I don't think I'll play this one. I found about a dozen words but I haven't entered any yet. Don't want to lower my ranking, I worked too hard. maybe i create a new name to play with so I can play these low scoring grids.
12:37 am
eyezzz

Got the 5 for 22 ~ it makes right.
12:37 am
eyezzz

There's an 8 for 45
12:40 am
runningforhome

An 8 for 70. It's a compound word, and it's really ridiculous.
12:40 am
Maudie

wow....eyezzz! I'm going to find that 8 and go to bed.
12:42 am
jeff

so does the eight have a d or a g in it?
12:49 am
Kmishkin

Ha ha...I emailed this site to a friend 4 months ago and never heard back. Now he tells me it's my fault he's hooked.
12:50 am
Riff

ugh, this puzzle sucks, I quit!
12:52 am
jeff

why wont anyone answer my question? The only answer is that the word doesn't exist.
12:52 am
Jeanette

21 / 4.05 / 145
I'm going to have to return later. My eyes hurt.
12:56 am
jeff

bulldog here, I did create a new handle to play this puzzle. I feel good about this considering. 15 words 4.00 100
after an hour.
12:59 am
Venka

Hey, this is my second game (started with previous one) and I have 27, 4.11 and 208. Guess I won't be ranking for awhile...
1:03 am
Christine

I'm with you, Jeff - I can't find those longe words.
32/22274 - some 5s but still nothing over 6/30
1:05 am
Christine

Oh, wishful thinking.
Of course, that should read 32 for 274.

Damn! this is too addictive; honestly, I did try to get away from the grid.
1:05 am
jeff

Man I hope that's a typo or were gonna be up late tonight
1:14 am
Christine

Actually, Jeff, I've been holding back, all this time... to give the rest of you a chance at the grid... but yes- that really is my score - 32 words for 22,274 points.
Put on another ppot of coffee, see if y'all can catch up.
<j/k>
1:15 am
jeff

I will quit right now if you tell me the 22000 point word
1:22 am
jeff

the eight letter word is similar to something you could find around a castle.
1:25 am
sleeky

Is it a compound word?
1:25 am
Christine

Each evening, when I see the new grid, I groan, and say it's impossible... well, today really IS a rotten game.
I wonder if we'll all be excited, pushing for clues to the longer words, in the final hours of the game?? I wonde if there ARE any long words... six letters is still my longest word.
But if I find that 22,000-point word, I promise to post it -- large and clear, for everyone to see.
1:30 am
Christine

Aaaah, found the 6/39-pointer... why is it acceptable, but not the dreaded N-word??
1:30 am
mellowmasher

50/508 Not a good grid 1 x 8 and 1x 7
2:01 am
jeff

seven huh, hint? hint? hint?
2:05 am
mellowmasher

Well if you get the 8 for 70 just take one letter away
2:06 am
mellowmasher

There is a second 8 for 45 but I think someone has already said that
2:06 am
Judith

Christine you disappoint me. How can an East End girl give up so easily.
2:06 am
jeff

that is a terrible word even worse than the 8 letter one. cappy grid. thanks for the hint, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten it.
2:08 am
jeff

help withthe 45 pointer is it d or g?
2:09 am
mellowmasher

56/580 I really hope theres not too many more I dont like this one, dont wanna spend all day please please nobody tell me theres over 100 words here lol
2:09 am
jeff

by cappy I meant crappy and I was refering to the 70 point eight and the 44 point 7, both of which are compound words
2:10 am
mellowmasher

The 45 one starts with a 4 letter word worth 5 points
2:14 am
jeff

is it a compound word or does it have a suffix?
2:15 am
Atalante

normally I like grids with less words .... but I do *not* like this one
2:16 am
mellowmasher

starts with i hope that helps
2:17 am
jeff

Now I remember seedeater with fondness
2:18 am
Christine

Judith -- Are you playing, today? What about Marianne?
I'm trying to read, here -- and the damned paper with the grid, is sitting on the bed, looking at me, so I keep coming back to thi bloody game.
Still only 38/345
I have books to read...
2:19 am
mellowmasher

There have been some stupid long words but this one.....
2:22 am
jeff

26 words 4.58 350
two 8's two 7's
2:27 am
jeff

nah seedeater is worse!!! memories are always better than present because the brain cannot remember pain.Hence people having more than one child.
2:28 am
mellowmasher

Ooh clue on the other 7 please... and I stopped at one child I DO remember the pain lol
2:29 am
jeff

Anyone who has read Asimov would know that he would be spinning in his grave over the will smith movie out now.
2:30 am
Atalante

that 8 for 70 is ... interesting :s
2:30 am
mellowmasher

Ouch no help sorry
2:30 am
jeff

I'm bored with this grid, here is a hint the word is similiar but not related to the device that starts your car
2:32 am
Atalante

catclaws was worse too!
2:33 am
jeff

here is the definition verbatim

the dried ripe seeds of the Saint-Ignatius's-bean used like nux vomica
2:34 am
jeff

I didn't think that it would help but google it and it is the first entry
2:43 am
mellowmasher

Still cant see it
2:51 am
jeff

cut copy paste the definition and google it, it is the very first word that comes up!
2:55 am
jeff

by the way the second entry on google is facinating aparently the seven letter word contains Strychnine.
2:58 am
mellowmasher

Lol I did and all I got was a lot of cd stores
3:00 am
jeff

The most direct symptoms caused by strychnine are violent convulsions
Strychnine is a poisonous alkaloid
Strychnine is rapidly absorbed into the intestines and exerts its characteristic effects on the central nervous system
the churches in the deep south that speak in tongues drank Strychnine.
3:01 am
jeff

copy this and google it again

the dried ripe seeds of the Saint-Ignatius's-bean used like nux vomica
3:02 am
jeff

I tried it three times and it works I promise
3:03 am
jeff

by the way I added that bit about the speaking in tongues. I saw that on the X-Files
3:03 am
jeff

ha ha hah ha ha hah
3:05 am
jeff

people in vegas I have a concert in two weeks. come to see the UNLV community band. I and my wife play. For info check UNLV bands on the web.
3:07 am
jeff

grammar bad
3:08 am
jeff

did you find the word. by the way I get chatty when tired, if you had not noticed.
3:10 am
jeff

wouldn't this game be better if you could enter the words by clicking on the tiles in the grid! send a message to show support
3:11 am
mellowmasher

Not sure why but google not helping is it a UK thing?? anyway thanks I think I will just have to keep looking
3:12 am
mellowmasher

Jeff if you dont mind me asking how many words do you have
3:13 am
ConXshun

nice to see you talking to yourself Jeff!
3:14 am
ConXshun

I keep seeing EIEIO, we could all sing it when we come to watch you play
3:18 am
Jodoy

Question re ranking: if you log on, but don't play, will this be taken as a zero score?

Also: how on earth do they calcuate the ranking?

Finally, does this mean only 600 maniacs play this game?

Jo
3:30 am
Atalante

The google thing definitely works on google.com
3:42 am
jeff

I'm really not trying tonite and I think that my score is not representative of my usual effort. I saw this grid and made a new name so I wouldn't ruin my hard earned rank. that said my current position is 26 words 4.58 350

3:42 am
jeff

And yes I know it is tonight
3:42 am
jeff

And yes I know it is tonight
3:43 am
jeff

I added the second entry so the person i am talking to could read it. myself ;(
3:48 am
ConXshun

lol. But to change your players name you first must've logged in as Bulldog anyway?
I hope myself that ranking doesn't start until words are actually entered...
3:52 am
jeff

I do not think that if you log on but do not play that the score is counted. But I only play the game not run it. If you really care about the ranking I suggest creating a new name. Only use it on your best scores. I did that very thing three times and Now I am ranked ninth. The name I used was efferyja and I scored over 3000 all three times with it. As bulldog I played almost every game for a month straight and am placed at 2o something. this puzzle sucks so I created a loser name to play with so I wouldn't ruin my hard work. incidently I was very pissed about the scoring and I only consider bulldog a real moniker. I will not soil its name with this trash and I will let the effery ja dissapear. I will not use that pig latin name ever again. See yesterdays log for my guesses as to how the rankings work. Furthermore as Jeff is my real name I do not like to use it as a pseudonym as it isn't one. i figure I can get away with this long log only because it is so very late. and that the second 8 has a crappy "shun" ending
3:52 am
jeff

jeff

notice the twice entered entries again. The connectino here is slow tonight. I prety sure that the wife is using a bit torrent to download illegal movies. inuyasha mostly.
4:00 am
jeff

If anyone has been paying attention to me and I have been very, very vocal I would like you to know that I am very, happy to be ranked 20 something. I feel that it is appropriate, I no longer hold any feelings of malice towards the sensai of thebabble world. moreover I would like to applaud them for creating what is most definately the most fun game I have played online ever. Oh it is late and I am getting sentimental and willy nelson is singing "you are always on my mind" and I got married last weekend but thank you babble creators and Oh man I love everyone.
4:01 am
Atalante

pah! gaia isn't accepted. and yes I know its a proper noun .... but such a cool proper noun!
4:01 am
jeff

No one ever play this late. I bet I could write a book on here and no one would ever know. I am writing a book, by the way.
4:02 am
jeff

where you at Atalante ? I'm in Las Vegas
4:07 am
Atalante

In the UK - its 10am here :)
And now I'm really annoyed it won't take ketamide .... thats a nice word
4:10 am
jeff

I hope Lawyer comes back I miss the clever and concerned remarks. That person never denigrated another nor did they ever compare themselves to another. I am shamed by my own self estimate. Moreover the person is a real lawyer and I have been taught by the media and by public opinion that Lawyers are the devil. If the devil were as responsible and commendable as that person is then consider me a son of Sam.m I really want Lawyer to continue to play. I only once beat him/her and only nce once tied him/her but I appreciated losing to him/her.
4:10 am
jeff

it is 2:11 a.m. here
4:11 am
jeff

I don't have to sleep because I don't work until the 10 of August
4:13 am
jeff

And School starts the 25th, I just like to get a head start and donate a couple of weeks. really I give a couple of hours day to work, during the vacation, it helps with the not sleeping
4:14 am
Atalante

yeah .... not that I could ever aspire to thinking about beating him - or you lol - but I like learning new words everyday reading your word lists ;)
4:20 am
jeff

Have you ever felt that 30 days weren't enough. A teacher fels that way always. kids don't grow fast enough and you don't improve fast enough. I was physically ill every morning for a year, like morning sickness but I'm male. Nerves can kill you. I was thinking about taking up law, I'm pretty logical and I am ethical and quite smart if I do say so myself. Kids are the very worst audience, they don't reason yet because their brains are developed yet. I digress. Oh man I gotta sleep.
4:21 am
jeff

By the way A psychologist said I was the most together person he had ever worked with. Honest, It was a great day in my life.
4:26 am
moody_mage

go to bed!!!

you are babbling rubbish :)
4:31 am
ConXshun

but he's writing a book!
4:32 am
Atalante

sleep is generally over-rated ...
4:33 am
jeff

no sleep for the wicked
4:33 am
ConXshun

heh, and all inspired by today's grid!
4:34 am
jeff

sleep is quite pleasant, I had a dream that I whipped everone to make them leave my classroom.
4:35 am
jeff

I figured that no one is going to have fun playing this grid so I figured the next best thing is to make the log a playground
4:35 am
moody_mage

that maybe so but looking at the postings you were the 1st peson to post and you are still here?!?

I can understand if you were me or someone else in the UK who should really be working but it's the middle of the night where you are!!!
4:36 am
FFFF

Jeff...are you talkative or something?^^

well well
this puzzle is too hard
only got...10 words! argh! shame on me!
I go back to work
4:37 am
ConXshun

middle of the night is the best time for book writing. The best ideas come then.
4:40 am
jeff

yeah I am skipping between the post and my word processor. frankly I like to do th whole thing in my head first. But I am having trouble with the end. I have a problem with letting go sometimes.
4:42 am
ConXshun

you could introduce some outside forces - like a huricane or a tidal wave - then letting go is easier than you want it to be... ;)
4:48 am
jeff

You UK folk, why is douglas Adams so damn clever. I personally feel that the Hitchhikers series is the finest literary achievement in the last twenty years. except for david eddings works, perhaps.
4:48 am
jeff

I would slap tom clancy, if given the chance
4:50 am
jeff

there is a greek letter in the puzzle
4:50 am
ConXshun

I'm not in the UK - but NL
4:50 am
granadan

31 WORDS AND SUFFERING.
4:53 am
ConXshun

I gave up on the grid long ago - now I' hooked to the log - jeff's playground ;)
4:53 am
moody_mage

If you like david eddings then I would highly recommend Robin Hobbs work.

If you do decide to read please ensure that you read them in order!!
4:53 am
jeff

what does NL mean?
4:54 am
jeff

I've read the belgariad somehing like 50 time, nojoke. Easily 50 times. I can almost recite it. What is this new series> I hunger for your words.
4:55 am
ConXshun

NL = the Netherlands
4:56 am
jeff

I totaly cannot get into terry pratchet. he is funny but does not have the rhythm of adams
4:56 am
jeff

Wow when you go on a date do you go dutch?
4:58 am
ConXshun

well - only if you have enough dutch courage to suggest it. But thinking about it - usually yes, it is in fact very 'normal' - except on birthdays when the one who's celebrating get to treat everyone....
4:59 am
granadan

I GIVE UP - MY TEN MONTH OLD ON MY LAP HAS JKUST HIT THE KEYS AND MADE A WORD - IM DOWN TO RANDOM TYPINGS NOW ;-((
5:00 am
moody_mage

there are 3 trilogies (9 books in total)

the 1st 3 are the Farseer Trilogy
the 2nd 3 are the Liveship Traders trilogy
and the 3rd 3 are the tawny man trilogy.

I love eddings work as well (although I prefered Sir Sparhawk at bit more than Belgareth and co..)

I have to say that robin hobb is my favourite author, I can't recommend highly enough. (Rumor has it that she addicted to babble and stalks these boards quite often!!)
5:02 am
Atalante

there are 2 greek letters in the puzzle ;)

and Robin Hobb is just the best!!!!!!!!
5:04 am
ConXshun

Anyone know (and can rate) Robert Jordan?
5:04 am
Atalante

well actually there's 3, but one is only 3 letters long
5:05 am
jeff

In America talk Going dutch means each person paying for themselves. I haven't gone dutch since I was seventeen. As I said earlier Asimov would be turning in his grave over the new movie "I Robot" He never put forth robots as something to fear. It was one of his central themes. He wanted to dispell that idea . And they have used his good name to create a new frankentein movie. I For one am outraged. I am totaly serious it pisses me off to no end. If this wasn't a family board I would use harsher language. I Have tried to find other boards, but I know for certain that the people who play this game are amoung the most intelligent and reasonable people on the planet. I say go to the movie and cause problems. I want to see it because it looks like a fun movie, I also love asimov and respect the scientist that he was. I am bringin' an ir horn with me to the theater and some stink pellets. I'm enraged.
5:07 am
granadan

4 GREEK LETTERS - ONE OF THEM NOT LONG ENOUGH :-))
5:07 am
Atalante

Robert Jordan, IMO, is very good up until about book 7 of the Wheel of Time. After that ... well .... nothing happens. He just writes a lot of words with no plot advancement ever
5:08 am
granadan

I KEEP SEEING THE PHRASE ODI ET AMO - ONLY ONE MORE O AND IT WOULD BE THERE
5:09 am
jeff

please forgive my spelling it is after 3 am. I will look into the Robin Hobbs books. I Also loved the Shannara series By Terry Brooks and so I don't sound like a loser one of my favorite books is the JD salingers masterpiece catcher in the rye, and steinbecks east of eden and Ayn Rands Fountainhead
5:10 am
jeff

And I loved the potter series. I read the Order of the phoenix twice, each time it only took me one day
5:11 am
Atalante

hmmm you must be working off a different Greek alphabet to me Granadan ;) you using modern or ancient? actually, is there a difference?
5:11 am
jeff

dead language
5:13 am
jeff

I'm sorry about the rambling, if it is upsetting you please say so and I will stop.
5:14 am
jeff

Of course I am feeling very typish. keyboard version of talkative
5:15 am
jeff

I'm sure serious black will reappear
5:15 am
jeff

maybe harry will get killed and bring serious back with him?
5:16 am
jeff

hey in the nl do you use the euro? or some crazy mark thing?
5:16 am
granadan

put greek alphabet into google and look at the fourth listing...
5:16 am
ConXshun

and having dutch courage means having a drink. A dutch oven is a fart under the bedclothes and double dutch is gobbledeegook

R. Jordan does indeed become tiresome. What I did enjoy was the Orson Scott Card 'Ender' series.
5:17 am
jeff

it could be called the den mark.
5:18 am
ConXshun

we use the euro - we used to use the guilder. the Mark thing is german

The first book in the ender series made me cry for a solid hour at the end.
5:19 am
jeff

the mark thing was a joke.
5:19 am
Atalante

I'm really confused - nothing new there. But I can really only see 3 greek letters. I've run through the whole alphabet about 27 times, and only three fit as much as I try and force all the others into the grid :S
5:20 am
ConXshun

but germans also use the euro now. Den mark... hmmm One of those scandinavian countries didn't opt for the euro
5:20 am
granadan

AH - THATS WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID ONE NOT LONG ENOUGH. 4 WORDS, BUT ONLY THREE WILL GO INTO THE GRID - SORRY.
5:21 am
jeff

I felt so bad for ender that I had to put the book down. Did you know that that book is being used in the USA in english classes. I had a senior talk to me about the book. It is so easy to ruin it for someone. I would hate to do that. But if you haven't read the book then do yourself a favor and pick it up tommorow.
5:21 am
ConXshun

yeah - pretty hefty stuff, Ender was. Did he ever write that last book?
5:22 am

Fricken fantastic book!!

I was 25 when I read it and I still cried like a baby.

5:28 am

I stopped at Enders Shadow. The following books we couldn't get!! And now I've forgotten what they were called.
5:28 am
jeff

I'm Norweigen and german by lineage my last name is Eichman. and I have to deal with that every day. Seriously I had a parent come to me in June and say he had a problem with my last name. There is no relation to the bad man but still the name follows me everywhere. I was also born on thor's day So I have researched all about the Norse religon. Are there any followers around anymore or is it just mythology ?
5:30 am
jeff

It is not often that I speak to someone from the scandanavian countries. How come I hate being cold but am as tough as an ox?
5:30 am
ConXshun

The Waldorf Schools which my kids went to all included the Edda and ygdrassil in their teachings. Rune Stones are known and used by some. For 'normal society' its all classed as 'alternative' or new age... but what do they know!
5:31 am
jeff

I once saw my dad cut off his thumb, he didnt even yell out. I'm that tough too. is that normal for the cold countries?
5:32 am
jeff

I own a set of rune stones, I bought them on a whim cause they looked cool to me.(18 years old) and I know that the ygdrassil is the worls tree with roots in HEl and ASGARD and In MITGARD
5:33 am
ConXshun

The dutch are not classed as scandinavian. The countries only join by a very small strip of land which I think joins germany to denmark. But I'm not altogether sure. Didn't get that info in geography classed in the UK
5:34 am
ConXshun

spose in cold countries everything freezes easily - even feelings.... The vikings were not really classed as romantic - so there you go!
5:35 am
moody_mage

is enders game the 1st in the series?
5:36 am
jeff

There are waldorf schools here too but they are hippy schools. what do you mean by the Edda and ygdrassil. are the the story of Ragnarok, similar to Beowolf
5:39 am
ConXshun

the Edda is the whole story with Ygdrassil being the world tree to which someone or other hung for a while- maybe Odin. and it tells of all the gods - Thor and Loki and all. Interesting stuff - especially if you can remember it! ;)

Ender's game is indeed the first book of the series
5:39 am
ConXshun

what do you mean by 'hippy' schools?
5:41 am
jeff

Ender's Game is first and if you read that one you will want to continue. the book is incredibly compelling. it follows the path of a young boy who is forced to become the next napoleon (Or Hitler) and defeat a powerful alien presence. it sounds cheesy and it basiclly follows that crappy movie Starship troopers but it does not pander, it does not reveal its secrets and it is captivating and is one of the most emotional books I have ever read. ender is a saint and he is forced into evil. Awesome. realistic and fearful similar to orwells 1984
5:42 am
jeff

Odin is hung from the tree he does it to gain wisdom
5:44 am
moody_mage

well i guess I'll grab a copy ASAP.

I wish I could 'forget' books I have read so as to be able to read them anew each time....
5:46 am
jeff

Hippys are those people who in europe would be referred to as gypsies, except here it is a conscious chioce to smell like petchouli and never bathe and not work and live in a VW Bus and go to Phish concerts and take mind altering chemicals.(while not in college) and be a general burden to the working populace of the world. Last week hippies from greenpeace traveled from San Fransisco to Oregon to Protest the sale of Wood that had Burned in a massive 750,000 acre forest fire.
5:47 am
jeff

Moody My dad does that, he is a litle senile though.
5:48 am
moody_mage

LOL well i guess that's one advantage of getting old!
5:49 am
Atalante

There's 2 Eddas really - the prose and poetic Edda. Get the prose one .... the poetic one is *hard* work - but very good. Well, both of them are brilliant :)
5:50 am
jeff

Have you ever tried to read beowulf?
5:50 am
ConXshun

Aha, hippies from the 70's. Well, over here the hippies from the 70's have grown up and have become quite respectable and responsible people who send their kids to Waldorf schools. But only because at these schools the Kids get a different perpective of life held before them than your normal academic achievements as being most important
5:52 am
jeff

The best thing about that book is the monty python movie. I am just kidding, i really like it. I've even read Sun Tsu's Art of War
5:57 am
moody_mage

I like the well meaning ethical adverts at the side of this site. Much better than the "You are a winner" adverts...
5:58 am
jeff

Hippies here have done the same thing, the only problem is that there is new generation of hippies and they haven't realized the world has changed. I lived that way myself for a while and found nothing but anger from the rest of the world. I realized that I was too good to waste on a life of uselessness. I still have leanings towards lawlessness but I believe that it is because man has evolved and can self govern better today than in the past. but I cannot accept anarchy until man grows upat least one more time. look at ou country. f---ing gw bush was elected president. the man was a coke fiend in college. I would rather vote for george Clinton. At least then we would live as one nation under a groove.
6:00 am
ConXshun

thanks for tips on Edda. When my kids were hearing about it I wanted to read them - never got round to it though.
6:03 am
jeff

I love norse mythology. i guess it because I have a huge comic book collection from the 80's. Thor as we all know is reponsible or thursday and Tyr is for tuesday and Wotan is wednesday. I aslo think that having a god who is not all good. I.e. Odin is a great motivator. oh and Frigga is Friday
6:04 am
ConXshun

the next evolutionary step from hippy is adhering to one of the up-dated natural religions. Combinations of various beliefs to make your own goodly one which suits you. Sort of like anarchy, but then a constructive one. I'ma bit like that I spose
6:04 am
jeff

Many people do not know about the days of the week.
6:04 am
Atalante

Beowulf? In English and Anglo-Saxon :P
6:07 am
Atalante

I was brought up on Norse mythology .... I loved it from a tiny age. And then spread out a bit - the Eddas of Iceland, the Kalevala, all the Anglo-Saxon epics. Its all so incredibly beautiful.
6:09 am
jeff

I have running beatin all my classes. I am a teacher If you haven't figured it out. I tell my students upfront that I will give them an A forever if they do one thing for me.

Tell me exactly why the alphabet is in the order it is in.

I have been researching it for years. it follows suit from the ancient greek houses and the phoenician alphabet. which is itself a combination of two greek letters alpha and beta.

You would think that something that is so important as the order of the letters in the english language would have some meaning.
6:09 am
ConXshun

Each country's mythology helps to understand better how everythings fits together. Even the ancient Egyptians had Seth - nasty brother of Osiris, but very necessary in the whole plan of everything. I mean, if everyting was all good all of the time, there'd be no 'movement' everything would be good but stagnant. That's why i like Loki - mischievous but not entirely evil
6:10 am
jeff

Beowulf? In English and Anglo-Saxon brilliant. the original is incomprehensible, but the alphabet is unchanging
6:11 am
jeff

I hear Icelnd is the most clear and uncorrupted version of norse mythos
6:11 am
Atalante

That is a very interesting question! To which I have no idea of the answer .... but I'll ask my husband - he's a classical greek scholar - he might know something about it ...
6:13 am
jeff

I have heard of seth as Set the mad Dog headed god. It is no wonderthat he had a dog head and that the dog is historically known as mans best friend
6:19 am
ConXshun

hehe - quite! A dog's head to symbolise animal instincts. Eventually he was put to rights by Horus, Osiris's son with Isis, who had a birds (I think falcon...?) head to symbolise the spirit. Mind over matter... ;)
6:20 am
jeff

I am absolutely positive that the question of the lphabets order has been asked before. the simpliest answer has ti do with the greek and before it the phonecian order of letters. iT never explains why however A must come before B. If THE Alpha house was greater than the Beta house . or one came first that would explain it to some degree. however the phoenecian order exsted before the greek and must have influenced it. There must be a real and physical reason that the alphabet is in the order it is in. Similar to the order to harmony that pythogras figured out. See I really have given this some thought. I feel that this question is mine and the answer is within my reach. Part two is why swear words are different than other words.
6:21 am
ConXshun

Atalante - could you post the details of the recommended Edda book - Is there an Icelandic uncorrupted version? ... :)
6:23 am
ConXshun

words when spoken are sound waves - which are powerful things... no?
6:28 am
jeff

Here is my most brilliant work to date and that which I want attributed to me after my death.

Swear words are chosn due to the dissonance they create in the brain pattern of the listener.

Think to the list of swear words in your vocabulary.

The sound of these words are dissimilar to the common words of polite conversation.

There is a preponderance of the k sound and other harsh sounds.
Conjecture:
The alphabet must be devised to seperate and hide the Swear sounds.

If for example the order were to list the most common sounds first then list the less common sounds then the alphabet would have e and s very near the beginning.

Y and Z being at the end are no suprise because hey are late comers and may have been tagged on to expidite certain spellings. W is simply two U's. X is unnecesary ecks.
6:30 am
jeff

ConXshun said...

words when spoken are sound waves - which are powerful things... no?

Brilliant after thought I came to the very same though several years ago.
6:31 am
jeff

I am absolutley sure I am on to something
6:33 am
ConXshun

So what about common laguage words which are also used as swear words? May than then have something to do with the intention an intonation with which the words is spoken?
6:33 am
jeff

I've only had one person tellme I am brilliant. and that was my Philosophy teacher in college
6:34 am
ConXshun

excuse the grammar! its late where you are - nearly time for you to get up! ;)
6:35 am
jeff

Swear words are mre defined by the intention. which is related to the manner in which they are given. A word that has a sonic dissonance and the inflection will be more powerful as a denegration than a simple common word that is spoken in a denegrating manner
6:38 am
jeff

This sonic manner of dissonance must have a control over the value system that we have of the letters we use.so we hide c,f,k,u,n,t, and others and seperate then from the good sounds
6:38 am
lawyer-1

Jeff....r u still here?
6:38 am
ConXshun

If its sonic dissonance which makes a word a swear word, is there also swear music. Some stuff written (including modern composers) sounds very dissonant to my ears. Or is that an age thing?
6:40 am
jeff

Absolutely I Wrote a piece of swear music , I call it the cruch song, it is very =, very hard to listen to, but is is strangely compelling. I would be glad to give it to anyone who wants it. Email me a jeffequalsband@hotmail.com

You want to look for the Prose Edda, otherwise known as the Snorra Edda (it was created by Snorri Sturluson). I'm not sure if any edition is better than any others, but getone from a reputable "academic" publisher like Oxford World Classics. I've got the Everyman edition which I'm more than happy with :)
6:46 am
ConXshun

would Amazon have it?
6:48 am
ConXshun

yep - they do - penguin edition
thanks for the info
6:48 am
jeff

I have writen hours of music and It creates mood through the use of dissonance and consonance. language is the same way. the ancient greeks and a theory called harmony of the spheres that said consonance held the planets in orbit and that dissonance would make the planets fly apart and the sky fall
6:50 am
ConXshun

also everyman edition.
Carolyn Larrington also does one through oxford classics.
6:52 am
ConXshun

Ancient egyptians also used sound as a powerful tool for all sorts of things from building and construction to healing. A science which for us is only just beginning to dawn.
6:59 am
Atalante

I do love Amazon :) I don't think I could live without it
7:03 am
jeff

Send me a mssage and I will send you a small collection of songs I have written
7:06 am

I like Amazon too. Quick and easy, The only trouble is that the money you spend there adds up to large amounts just as quickly and easily!
7:08 am
ConXshun

Hey, jeff. You're right - really awful music although I had to listen to it till the end. i like the humour you've got in there - the pauses. It's comic relief! ;) I'm in for more of your stuff, if you want to send it.

Due to this discovery I now vow not to use the new name of efferyja. I will now only use Bulldog as is only right.
7:21 am
jeff

good work but if you read further on I said
I only consider bulldog a real moniker. I will not soil its name with this trash(meaning this low scoring puzzle)and I will let the effery ja dissapear.
7:21 am
ConXshun

crunch or cruch? - spose it depends on what 'mood' or state of mind you're in. And it is compelling. you're other (very) dissonant one i couldn't handle and was able to stop (unlike Cru.ch) Is the music you sent representative of the stuff you and your band do?
7:22 am
jeff

I ethical and all but this grid is trash and i worked too hard to lose my ranking on this one
7:23 am
jeff

No band I do it myself throught the wonder of midi. I do not sample and everything I write has sheet music
7:23 am
jeff

Crunch
7:27 am
ConXshun

nice going!
7:28 am
jeff

Every piece I write is different like a child. It follows my mood and it is very very difficult to collect the emotional energy to create one of my pieces. I write them in one setting some may take me hours some minutes. but I feel that If I cannot get my idea down in one sitting I have lost the impression that led to the original piece. I ws quite depressed when I wrote much of my music and I haven't had the angst necessary to devote my time to music. I have a degree in music, but recently I have been writing and painting
7:29 am
jeff

Damn my happy disposition
7:30 am
jeff

The piece in D is my best work
7:31 am
jeff

It is one huge palindrome. the middle overlaps and the backwards and forewards are happening at the same time and it creates the most wonderful harmony.
7:35 am
ConXshun

angst...? I dont know this wordt - except of course in dutch where it means 'fear'. In the context of your msg, i don't think it means that.

Anyway - music is a good hobby to have, especially when you're good at it. I use music, because I'm not good enough at it to make it. but it is a necessary part of life.
7:35 am
jeff

I even wrote a piece that began beforeit was possible. I wrote some music did hundreds of edits to to and worked from the middle to the beginnign and end. that was hard. you got development before the main theme.
7:36 am
jeff

There is no good there is only taste
7:37 am
jeff

Once in music school a good friend asked me what band i would like my band to sound like. Being a good friend he worded the question " Besides yourself what bands would you like you band to sound like?"
7:39 am
ConXshun

by 'good' I mean that you can produce outwardly what's going on inwardly satisfactorily (for yourself).
7:40 am
jeff

Dance and rock music are very easy to write. you don't need to go to school to write them. Art music is Hard. I like Art music. I enjoy pop I respect those who try to do both. like Frank black and many others.
7:40 am
ConXshun

basically - being able to express yourself to your own satisfaction through whatever medium you choose - music, art, dance...
7:41 am
jeff

For my personal enjoyment I write music. I have a dy job thank god I would be a miserable failure at writing pop. I could never let it go. You will never understand the love that went into the Crunch song. though I hate it.
7:42 am
ConXshun

then taste only becomes a matter of 'tuning in' with whatever is on offer. having an affinity with of resonating on the same frequency is usually referred to as 'I like it'.

We're back to sound waves.... ;)
7:42 am
jeff

there is no way to put the crunch song to a steady beat
7:44 am
ConXshun

hating it is just as strong a feeling as liking it. And if its compelling to listen to, it doesn't matter at which end of the scale the reaction is - like of dislike
7:45 am
jeff

I remember playing with a band on saxophone and getting into a big argument over the chord changes. There weren't any. I was young and I wanted chord changes. Now I want the ground key. taste changes and I am no longer satisfied with my earlier work. and I Define agnst as a desire to fight the status quo. anything but here. now is bad, anger is energy. youhful motives
7:51 am
jeff

I have what I feel is an exellent education in the arts, I know what I like. I understand music and painting. creation is not as easy. I have created art. I recognized it when I did it. I don't know how to tap into the ability. That makes me a hack. I can do it. I could produce massive works and be adored. I lack something and believe me it isn't confidence. Insight is fleeting. Much of what I have already done is better than what I will ever do. Somtimes I feel like Stephen Hawkins.
7:55 am
Krista

"I lack something and believe me it isn't confidence."....I believe you.
7:55 am
ConXshun

you may like Philip Glass then.

and tapping into abiblity... isn't abiblity there all the time, its just the inspiration, the real connection with that part of you which is creative, inspired which is needed. In this day and age often difficult to find the time, rest and space to connect to it....
7:56 am
jeff

I have played infront of 500.000 people you don't do that with shaky knees
7:57 am
jeff

philip glas had an entire audience sit insilence for over 4 minutes and called it a piece of music. he even has a copywrite on it
7:58 am
ConXshun

the inspiration and composition is done at a different time from the performance of it!
7:59 am
ConXshun

and four minutes of silence can do an awful lot with people - sometimes more than if it were filled with music!
7:59 am
jeff

I prefer Ira Glass
8:00 am
jeff

minimalism is a very dangerous artform.
8:01 am
jeff

I have a standing definition of music in my classes: Silence and sound, usually there is too much of the later and not enough of the former
8:02 am
jeff

Too much minimalism and all there is is a blank canvas
8:05 am
jeff

I have only 29 words, but here is my breakdown so far:

a x 1
d x 3
g x 1
h x 3
i x 1
k x 5
l x 3
m x 5
t x 7

What do you all have? There are soooo many clues with in the message board for 7 and 8 letter words, I'm having a hard time putting them all together. If anyone could condense their clues together, that would be, like, totally awesome (dude).
9:11 am
boatierra

Won't take tink.
9:15 am
Cheater

mulhermujer,

our numbers are similar, so our thinking must be similar, but if you were thinking similarly, you whould have a 7 and an 8 letter word.

a/1
d/2
g/1
h/3
i/1
k/1
l/4
m/6
o/1
t/10
9:26 am
boatierra

Here's what I have found, starting at the bottom (begining):

12:19 a 6 for 39
12:37 an 8 for 45
12:40 an 8 for 70
2:09 a 7 for 44
2:22, two 8's, and two 7's

So there are some out there, I'm just having a difficult time putting it all together. I'm a patterns based kind of person. Chaos can really throw me off. So when clues are all over the place I have a hard time putting 2 and 2 together.
9:30 am

Got a 7 for 32 from the, "the dried ripe seeds of the Saint-Ignatius's-bean used like nux vomica," definition. Thanks to whoever put that out.
9:33 am
runningforhome

I have 47 words for 536 points.
One is an 8 for 70, it's a compound word about something you might find outside a castle.
If you remove the first letter of that word, you get a 7 for 44.
There is an 8 for 45, its four-letter rort word is worth 5 points.
There is a 7 for 32 that begins with the same letter as the 8 for 45. It involves seeds of a certain plant, and the word sounds similar to what you use to start your car.

Can't help on the 6 for 39 though.
9:37 am

Sorry, that'd be 'root word', not 'rort word'.

Modina - I can give you a clue for 6/39 .. if you were Black, what would be the worst slur thrown at you? Okay, change color and think of the word (some) Blacks use to hurt whites??

The racist word is not spelled quite like I've usually seen it, but is a fairly common racial slur against whites. Maybe it's more common in the US southern states? I grew up in TN....

ugh -- just got the racist thing -- also has a 4 ltr in it which I had early on; think of another name for a 'western bar' & the music played therein

What a lovely intellectual conversation tonight, more fun than this difficult puzzle ! I think I am too tired to work out
from the clues, long day at work. I should at least get the chemical ones, but I can't

So, are there 2 8's for 45 or just 1? I have the one starting with the 5-point, 4-letter i word. Any clues for the other?
7:06 pm
parker313

From what I've been able to tell from the clues and from what I've been able to find, there are 2 8s - one for 45 and one for 70.
7:14 pm
jlm_mi

Yeah, that makes sense now. I read the "2nd 8 for 45" as 2 for that point value, but your explanation makes sense.

I put the grid into a boggle solver (and did NOT cheat ;) ) and it showed only 2 8s.
7:14 pm
Atalante

as far as I know, there is an 8 for 45 and an 8 for 70. And 7s for 32, 40 and 44
7:20 pm
jlm_mi

I've got those, and a 6 for 30 and a 6 for 39. Anyone know point counts and/or have hints for other 6s?
7:25 pm
jlm_mi

Ooh - Found a 3rd 6. This one is also for 60. It starts with K and I'm guessing it's a scientific term, though dictionary.com doesn't have a definition.

oh, thought I could stay away but I'm addicted!! ;-) come back to find JLM has posted 9 Ks?! So of course I have to search more . . . found an alternate spelling for cabbage-like veggie and now, thanks to hints, the 'scientific' one. I'm a chemist -- who spells it with a K??? :-P
Hope the next grid is more friendly.

Hey, I'm only hanging around for the chat, today, so I guess it doesn't matter too much.
