On any flight I've been on that has been "overbooked", the flight attendant has stood at the front of the plane with his/her compartment mic and explained the situation and compensation and asked for volunteers to deplane. Never saw a problem, someone always stood up and took the bait. Apparently this was not the case but the way it "used to be" made more sense.

I flew every week for 2 years, 2 flights each way and I never once saw airline folks ask for volunteers AFTER boarding. It was ALWAYS prior to boarding. Their computer tells the agent that there wont be enough seats so they start asking for vols while everyone is still waiting to board. This was simply agent incompetence. His background has no effect on the outcome. I also read that the security guys were not allowed to get on the plane and actual police should have been called. He will be paid alot of $$$ eventually. The United prez should also be fired for his idiotic tweets that he had to back off of. New 2017 word re-accomodate ??? Sounds like 1984 word.
