ruby was lamenting in an email that she hadn't planned anything 'to do' while we are there. i told her i fancied a couple of quiet days AND we have a car which can be used for sightseeing with ruby as a guide.

*giggles* ruby is usually lamenting. Doesn't mean she isn't happy. When I was there, we didn't 'do' anything special. We talked, played scrabble, talked some more, hugged, cuddled the puppies... and had a splendid time. I don't need a lot of sightseeing while there. Just spending time with you all is blessing enough.

Yes, a light sussex having an explanatory word about laying eggs to my cat Daisy. Daisy sadly is no longer with, but Lulu the Light Sussex is, and still laying.

We have australorps, they were a breed that the early settlers used as they are large birds and good for meat as well as good layers.

I haven't heard of them. The best layers here are hylines which are used by the egg farms. I have a few but none of them are laying much at the moment. I guess it is the colder weather starting. Our cat doesn't care about the chooks either . It prefers hunting the mice in chook pen.

Hylines lay for about two years and then are burnt out. Australorps dont lay so prolifically but lay for more years.

The Light Sussex is about 6 years old I think, and still laying every two or three days. I think the Warrens were a cross, bred just for eggs. They are quite a small breed gingery colour. I call them Ginger and Spice (very original).
