mother had an old one, where you had to manually release pressure. I was afraid of getting steamed. I know the new one don't do that, but I still don't want one.
9:57 am
BzznBea

You can let the pressure release naturally from the IP and that eliminates the steam. Or I sometimes use the handle on a long wooden spoon to release the pressure. I have yet to be burned.

Day
3
Ketchikan, Alaska, US

May 6, 2020
Arrives 08:00 AM
Departs 05:00 PM

In Partnership With
Alaska’s “First City” of Ketchikan is so named because it’s the first major landfall for most cruisers as they enter the picturesque fjords of the Inside Passage, where the town clings to the banks of the Tongass Narrows, flanked by green forests nurtured by abundant rain.
Ketchikan has long been an important hub of the salmon-fishing and -packing industries—visitors can try their luck on a sportfishing excursion or simply savor the fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants. It is also one of the best spots along the Inside Passage to explore the rich cultural sights of Native Alaskan nations like the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. You can see intricately carved totem poles at the Totem Heritage Center and Totem Bight State Park, while the attractions of Saxman Village just outside of Ketchikan offers the chance to see Tlingit culture in action, with working carvers and a dance show in the clan house. And leave time to explore the sights in the town itself, including historic Creek Street, a boardwalk built over the Ketchikan Creek, where you can shop for souvenirs, smoked salmon and local art, while exploring gold rush–era tourist attractions like Dolly’s House Museum.

Top 3: Things to See
1
Misty Fjords National Monument
The rain forests, glaciers and wildlife of Misty Fjords National Monument are best explored by boat or seaplane.
2
Saxman Native Village Totem Pole Park
Watch totem poles being carved and traditional dances being performed at this village south of Ketchikan.
3
Creek Street
Ketchikan's former red-light district now draws visitors with its stores and galleries.

Misty Fjords National Monument by Seaplane (with Wilderness Landing)
Starting At $329
Discover magnificent Misty Fjords National Monument with a flight aboard an authentic Alaska seaplane -- a de Havilland Beaver or Otter. These two workhorses of the skies are the world's most famous bush planes and offer you a chance to view some of the most spectacular scenery in Alaska from the comfort of a window seat.
Enjoy your pilot's narration with individual headsets on this once-in-a-lifetime experience. A highlight of your tour will be an exhilarating water landing, where you can step out onto the plane's pontoon with your pilot to enjoy the fresh fjord air, eagle calls, and breathtaking scenery.
Misty Fjords National Monument is home to some of the most dramatic scenery in Alaska. At 2.3 million acres, it is almost four times the area of Rhode Island. Only by air can you fully appreciate the dramatic beauty of land slowly crafted by nature over tens of thousands of years. Massive glacier action created this ice-rimmed wilderness. You will see majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls, jewel-like lakes, and abundant wildlife. Marvel at sheer walls of granite plunging more than 3,000 feet into the fjords. Lush forests of spruce, hemlock and cedar clinging to snowcapped peaks in this land of incredible natural beauty and rugged grandeur.
Your flight route is dependent on the day's weather. You may see New Eddystone Rock and Big Goat Lake to the south, or Neets Bay and Bell Island Hot Springs to the north. Your pilot will fly over the glacier carved fjords, beautiful river valleys, and pristine mountain lakes, identifying the scenic wonders for your viewing pleasure. The dramatic Misty Fjords terrain is home to a multitude of wildlife. You may be rewarded with sightings of brown and black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolves, moose and bald eagles.

Ketchikan Salmon Fishing
Starting At $199
Enjoy a 25- to 30-minute guided bus tour along the Tongass Narrows on your way to the marina.
From there you will board a modern fishing boat, and head to the nearby salmon fishing grounds. Keep an eye out for eagles, whales, seals, sea lions or other wildlife.
With only 4-6 guests per boat, you're off for a fine 3½- to 4-hour fishing adventure in the sheltered waters of Clover Passage.
Notes:
Alaska State law requires a valid one-day fishing license, which may be purchased for US $25 cash from your fishing boat captain along with a US $15 cash king salmon stamp (during king season, May-June). The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has put in place a conservation measure in southeast Alaska waters to protect the king salmon species. Any king caught up until June 14 must be released. Trolling involves using a downrigger to lower the bait to a specific depth. There are four downriggers, so up to four rods may be fished at once, allowing for fishing at different depths. Fishermen are rotated (instead of assigning rods) so that everyone has a fair chance to catch a fish. The captain may elect to use only two rods if the fish are plentiful. A light snack is provided. Guests who choose to have their fish processed and sent home (to US or Canada addresses only) will need to bring their credit card to pay for processing. A catch is likely but is not guaranteed. Minimum age is 5 years. Dress warmly in layers. Wear a hat or beanie; bring gloves and a scarf.

The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show & Crab Feast
Starting At $144
Taste and experience what makes Alaska such an awesome place to visit with this Alaska-style crab-crackin' and lumberjackin' day out.
It's a short walk from the ship to the Lumberjack Sports Arena where Ketchikan celebrates its annual logging heritage Timber Carnival. Today it's the venue for the one-hour Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show extravaganza, where professionals battle it out in chopping, sawing, tree-climbing, axe-throwing, history-telling and more. Round up your rowdy friends and join in the Alaskan 'axe-tion' in this amazing competition of skill and strength. Alaska's frontier lumberjacks battle British Columbia's premier woodsmen in a no-holds-barred competition for the 'Bull of the Woods' title. These world-champion athletes wear spiked boots and hard hats, competing in 12 athletic events with seven-pound axes, six-foot razor sharp saws, tree climbing gaffs, and souped-up chainsaws. Your cheers will turn to roars of excitement as axes fly through the air, and men free-fall from tall trees and run atop spinning logs floating in the water. Meet the surviving lumberjacks after the show for photos!
Next up, a narrated coach drive takes you through Ketchikan, past some of the iconic landmarks and popular attractions of this charming waterfront town.
Come hungry for the all-you-can-eat crab feast at the rustic-yet-elegant George Inlet Lodge. This magnificent lodge that was once an old cannery and was moved across the ocean to its current location. Dine on fresh Dungeness crab, baby red potatoes, delicious oriental salad and a fabulous cheesecake with blueberry toppings for dessert.
The drive back to the ship is via scenic landscape, the pristine Tongass National Forest and picturesque Ketchikan, where you have some free time to shop.
Notes:
Tour operates rain or shine in heated and covered grandstands, but may be cancelled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Video recording is not permitted but still photos are allowed. Vegetarian and non-crab options are available. There are numerous steps to negotiate at the lodge; a van ride is available to those who cannot manage steps. One beverage is included; additional glasses can be purchased at your own expense.

Rain Forest Trail Bike & Hike Adventure
Starting At $149
Join an experienced Alaskan trail guide for a mountain bike ride through the unspoiled beauty of Ketchikan's coastal rainforest. The gently sloping historical trail weaves through the Tongass National Forest, under the cover of towering old-growth spruce and hemlock.
The three-mile-long trail has a series of optional, fun features accessible for riders of all abilities and skill levels.
Gather by the warm campfire at a rustic creek-side camp to enjoy a hearty Alaskan-style snack, including clam chowder and smoked salmon.
A guided nature walk highlights the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska, including a carnivorous plant called the sundew, which uses tentacles with an adhesive 'dew' to ensnare small insects.
Conclude with the scenic drive back to the pier, narrated by your guide.
Notes:
Minimum age is 8 years. Participants must be in good health and have no conditions that restrict or impede their ability to participate in riding a bicycle. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the biking and walking are over varied natural terrain including dirt trails, exposed tree roots and rocks. Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid walking shoes.

Tatoosh Islands Sea Kayaking
Starting At $159
Join this memorable trip into the Tongass Rain Forest to the Tatoosh Islands, to paddle with Ketchikan's most experienced local sea kayaking company among magnificent scenery and wildlife sighting opportunities.
Take a 25-minute van ride; then, a fast and fun boat ride brings you to a world of ancient cedars, spruce and western hemlock trees.
At the remote and protected Tatoosh Islands, your guides greet you and present a quick but thorough orientation. Get into your double kayak and set off, beginning with some practice strokes as you approach the sheltered islands. Surrender to the peacefulness of the setting as you glide along the wild rocky shoreline.
Bald eagles peer down from overhead while seals often pop up to take a peek. The intertidal zone includes mink, river otter, orange and purple starfish, red and white jellyfish, mussels and seaweeds. Further out in the floating bull kelp, watch for harbor seals, who watch back with a shy and curious disposition. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, sea lions and orca. Black bears and wolves have been sighted here as well.
Notes:
No kayaking experience is necessary. Tour operates with a limited number of guests under special use permit with the US Forest Service. Minimum age is 6 years. Maximum weight is 265 lbs. Maximum height is 6'6". Not advisable for guests with back or heart problems.

Rain Forest Sanctuary Walk, Totems & Eagles
Starting At $99
This eco-exploration includes a guided nature hike, bald eagles, an on-site totem park and a historic sawmill at an exclusive reserve located in the forested mountains at rustic Herring Cove. A pristine natural environment, it is home to bald eagles, black bear, seals and a variety of birds and other species attracted by the major salmon runs in the abundant marine estuary.
A naturalist will guide you along an improved trail through the heart of the dense forest, among tall stands of hemlock, spruce and cedar, stopping at strategically located viewing areas. At a protected, open estuary, you'll follow Eagle Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. Major runs of salmon return to spawn here. Listen to the symphony of bird activity in this spectacular setting. Seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels of wildlife activity.
A half-mile trail walk brings you to the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill.
View bald eagles and other birds of prey up close at the Alaska Raptor Center's exhibit, and check out the amazing collection of totems in the courtyard. Shopping opportunities await you in the General Store before the scenic drive back to the ship.
Notes:
Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Tour operates in all weather conditions. Dress warmly in layers. Wear a hat or beanie; bring gloves and a scarf. Rain ponchos provided. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Backcountry Zodiac Expedition
Starting At $199
Skipper a custom-built motorized inflatable along the remarkable coastlines of Revillagigado Island and Gravina Island -- proposed home to the now-infamous and politically-charged 'Bridge to Nowhere'.
Listen to a short briefing; then, gear up with top-of-the-line rainwear, hat, gloves, socks, boots and safety glasses. Keep your camera handy, as this seafaring adventure offers photo opportunities from the moment you set out.
You're in charge of your four-passenger boat and will steer yourself into the beauty of Alaska far away from the crowds. Follow your guide to the harbor in front of Saxman Native Village for a chat about the totem poles and Tlingit culture. Throughout this nearly 25-mile coastal expedition, your guide will offer a narrative covering the area's history, geology, culture and ecology.
You'll search for bears, eagles, whales and seals, and venture into the wilds of Nichols Passage. Marvel at the beautifully rugged coastline of southeast Alaska and the intended site of the politically fraught bridge. Navigate among the coves and inlets around Blank Island, view the tranquil site of an old gold mine and visit a seal rookery.
Once back at the marina, you'll dock your boat and warm up with a hot beverage before returning to the ship.
Notes:
Minimum age is 4 years; maximum age is 75 years. Minimum age to drive is 25 years with a valid driver's license or other proof of age. Maximum weight is 300 lbs. Maximum of four guests per boat; all eligible guests will have a chance to drive if they wish. Parties of one or two will share a boat. Tour route may vary due to tide and weather conditions. Participants must be able to climb into and out of the boat at the dock. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. Guests with back or neck issues and pregnant women are not allowed to participate. The sea can become choppy and the ride can be very bumpy.

Hunting for Halibut
Starting At $369
This is the experience many anglers dream of when planning an Alaskan vacation, fishing for the largest flatfish in the world, the Pacific Halibut. Imagine catching your first wild halibut with your friends or family and the bragging rights that will come with sharing your experience back home.
Unlike many other Alaska destinations, Ketchikan fishing is in protected waters a short ride from downtown Ketchikan. No matter your skill level, you'll experience halibut fishing like a local, with a halibut rod and Penn reel in your own two hands, working the sandy flats, drifting with the current, jigging in waters as deep as 300 feet.
Spend the day with an experienced Alaskan fishing guide, in pursuit of the elusive halibut, learning the secrets of fishing circle hooks, working the tides and battling your catch.
Fully outfitted and accompanied by an experienced guide, your only job will be to catch the fish -- a job that requires a little patience, a steady jigging arm, and perseverance at the reel.
Notes:
Alaska State law requires a valid one-day fishing license, which may be purchased for US $25 cash from your fishing boat captain. Participants may keep one halibut per person that is less than 43 inches or more than 80 inches in length. Fish can be shipped anywhere within the United States. Boxed snack includes smoked salmon dip, crackers, fruit, and a cookie. Minimum age is 5 years. Dress warmly in layers. Wear a hat or beanie; bring gloves and a scarf.

I've only done a caribbean cruise, but loved it. Should have done an arabian gulf cruise and up through the suez canal, but it's now been cancelled. I don't think anyone is too old for a cruise. You can do as much or as little as you want to.
