Typicall by trial and error and using the clues posted in the chat log. I find many, many words that I don't know what they mean, just because they seem like they could be words and I know I haven't found them all yet. :)

The C/8 reminded me of a lyric in a Weezer song called El Scorcho, where they mention the name of an opera singer. It sounds quite similar to the name.

Doubt that'll be helpful... all the clues seem totally obvious once you've found the word, but are fairly baffling before. ;)
