I know the pain. Someone applied for unemployment benefits in my name a couple of weeks ago. I had frozen my credit info after the Experian hack, so I didn't have to do that again. Add ransomware to that list of horrible online stuff. I had my computer cryptolocked a couple of years ago and lost all my data--including the automated backup. What bothered me the most was losing all my photos--most especially photos of my granddaughter. Luckily I had sent some of my favorites to other people by email attachment, so I could get those back. But, due to the threat of ransomeare, I now use two external harddrive backups, and disconnect them from the computer alternately.

Reading all the horror stories - the best insurance agains computer ransoming is to back up everything on an auxiliary hard drive (there are some good ones out there that cost less than $100 and are about 3" square in size) -- you just unplug it (USB)whenever you are not using it to back up files, which I do on a weekly basis, or a day of heavy use. They do. I have neighbors who have horses and I always let them know well in advance of when I'm shooting them off. Also, we are on 10 acres and 600 feet off the road, 500 from our closest neighbors... We have other neighbors who ride their bikes over when we do fireworks, have had main road passers-by who have come to make sure we were not on fire and stayed to watch the show (we generally do a bon fire - read into that "burn trees that are in a 10' tall pile" and the light can be seen from 1/4 mile from the main road), have had the Po-po called on us (who pulled into our driveway and got out to enjoy the show, as well) because the individual thought we may be at war, lol. yep, Hursh. We have ex-military friends who have PTSD. Sometimes they feel up to it, sometimes not. I still offer them the option to come out... I've also had a friend's grandchild who had to watch from inside the cab of their truck because she got scared with the noise... I do my best to make sure all are comfortable and feel secure... even if they have to sit on the couch and look out the living room/den windows...

We're considered county so while we can only buy fireworks 30 days out of the year (15 up to Jul 4th and 15 up to New Years) there is no ordinance dictating when we can light them off... we had to do one in August one year because we were under a burn ban through the month of July... think that's when the Po-po visited...

Oh, loose balloons and WalMart bags piss me off... At least our trash is in one area and we take care of it. After Katrina the freaking blue WalMart bags were EVERYWHERE, stuck in trees, ditches, almost anywhere one could imagine. Balloons? I've never thought those were good, lol. I can totally see the anger against fireworks, I just don't feel it. And, like I said, I do my best to make sure everyone who has livestock (only horses now, all cows are gone) is aware of events. There are only 20 homes in my area so it's not difficult to notify them, lol. Not being defensive, just saying not everyone is irresponsible and inconsiderate.

We can only buy for 15 days every 6 months... Jun 15 > Jul 6 then Dec 15 > Jan 1... there is no ordinance prohibiting when they are fired off. Only a burn ban (drought situation) can stop you (if you're smart)… also, if, for whatever reason, you catch your field on fire and the FD has to come out, you can be fined... last I heard $500 here... We try to make sure we have enough people (have had in excess of 75 folks some times, lol) to help us watch the burn factor. Knock on wood, have had no runaway fires to date, either from the bon fire or from the fireworks...

I wonder - but I've come to the conclusion that the more conservative one's political views, the less likely they are to wear a mask. This comes from the arguments on the local town bulletin board on FB. The liberals are arguing for wearing masks, and the conservatives are balking.

just came back to finish and will offer my two cents. I live in the south but in a very well educated area, Most people here are rocket scientists and we are liberal and very few wear masks which is why our numbers are very high. I cannot understand it. My family who lives the north say everyone is wearing masks. It is baffling

It could be the locale - I'm in a rural county in the Sierra foothills in Calif, and conservatives are a majority here - and they're the ones arguing "my body, my choice" about masks, yet they are not pro-choice when it comes to other issues.

Oh, yes. This is a serious problem. It started two years ago. They closed down a lot of voting places. Two years ago I stood in line for 2 1/5 hours to vote. I live in a predominantly minority populated area. Hmmm ... couldn't have been a deliberate maneuver, eh?

I don't know gr. I am in favor of vote-by-mail, which is an option here in California now. But the Republican party opposes it because they want to suppress voter turnout. Obviously they know that large voting numbers are not in their favor.

over here, voting by mail is only an option if you are not going to be "at home" on the day. we do have absentee voting, which means we can vote before the day, in person, because we won't be home. otherwise, we are expected to turn up on the day, come rain or shine, and vote.

Ori, I thought we were totally by mail in Calif now? Or maybe just my county. For the primary, we could go drop off our mailed ballots, but all ballots were mailed. They only had a few drop spots, which made the drive to drop off your ballot much further than to the old voting locations.

What's the penalty is one doesn't vote, Rose? I can't imagine not voting, but one thing I hate about the system in Calif is the propositions - people read the synopsis and vote based on that instead of the actual wording of the new law. We've had some ugly things pass that people complained about later - I've seen many say "I wish I had read the whole thing." I hope they've learned, but the presentation of the proposition is definitely not neutral.
