I used to live in Mexico where there is a huge industry of providing cosmetic surgery to Americans. It's cheaper to fly to Mexico and live there for a few weeks than it is to get the surgery in the U.S. Most of that is unnecessary (IMO) stuff, like face lifts, but some is stuff like dental implants that people genuinely need.

there are long waits for surgeries that are not life threatening. If you have the money and want immedieate surgery for other things, you can pay a premium and get them. Take my eye surgery for example. I paid to have mine done at a private clinic because I wanted the top of the line lens and a surgery date about 6 months in advance of what I would have had otherwise.

You're setting up a false dichotomy, Molly. Neither system is perfect, and neither system is without problems. Each systems has some pros and some cons. What people are saying is that overall with universal health care the system is cheaper, and more able to treat everyone, than a for-profit system.
