Oh Torgone- been there! My youngest child is 25 now - my littlies are their children. My only advice with teens is to hang in there and love them. They break your heart a thousand times but they still need you to love them regardless. My mother used to call it the iron fist in a velvet glove treatment!

Ice and cold and snow and slush are BAD! I've laid in slush under a truck, changing a frozen fuel filter so the truck can run. I've laid in the snow in -20 F weather, trying to unfreeze my fuel oil tank so my wife and baby don't freeze to death. I've slid my car off the highway trying to get to work in the middle of the worst blizzard in 30 years. I don't wish to do that any more.

Usually that's been true, but it has been so bizarrely warm this November, that the bears have remained active. There have been quite a few sightings. Jera- actually I'm the one with the bears. zubie is in the Middle East where, so far as I know, there are no bears. I haven't actually seen the local denizens (no pun intended), but have seen their marks on the trees and the results of feeders left on the tree too late lasat spring.

My Girl Scouts had a special backyard workshop awhile back & made deer treats & pine cone birdfeeders to decorate my yard... they are naked now! The deer treats were gone in a week!

morning all. Speaking of bird feeders ... we usually just get finches, chickadees and once in a while a grosbeak or two. But the cotton pickin' flickers have found the feeder. They're so darn big they end up spilling half the seed on the ground, then the deer show up for lunch. bother.

Jera-how did you make the treats? I saw a new line of bird feeders yesterday that were brilliant - made entirely of wire mesh - and collapsible- with metal roof and floor. About as close to squirrel proof as anything I've seen. Before the bears trashed everything last spring, the squirrel had begun to gnaw their way through the plastic roof - doing so while hanging upside down by one paw. You gotta hand it to them! Sometimes I think the easier thing to do would be to become a squirrel watcher - but they are such destructive little critters.

I'm back... just read your post, Eva... personally, I like squirrels better than birds most of the time... but not as many varieties... I'm pro-mammals, I guess. Birds are so nasty, I'd never have one as a pet...

The deer treats are easy... oatmeal & sorgham (plus we added berries, corn is good, too). We shaped them into ornaments & decorated the fence. The Girls wanted to decorate our Yule tree from last year (we always plant them in the back yard after the holidays), but I didn't want the deer nibbling on the tree itself by accident.

The deer destroyed Sprite's little garden she had right next to the back door, but she didn't care since they are sooo cool... she may get over that after a few years...

We have a "wild forest" in our back yard. He is driven crazy by the moles. He digs deep holes everywhere trying to chase them down. He's only caught one once.
