Was Kaplan alerting us about "paisan", and if so, why, given that it isn't even in the grid? It appears that it means "friend" in Italian, and according to Collins is used in British English to mean "a fellow countryman", and in the U.S. to mean "an Italian-American" (with no suggestion that it is considered offensive).
