just read an article about the Coachella valley going all out to welcome Canadians back to spend their winters there again... they would be better to go after the US government and it's border policies. USA border guards are now demanding that we open our cell phones so that they can check everything on them before coming into the states. No way Jose -- I have personal medical and financial info stored on that phone -- no way will I allow an invasion of privacy like that - do they think canadians are crazy as well as push over's?
1:21 pm
Atalante
hows mark carney managing?
1:27 pm
granadan
How the hell is that legal Nan?
1:27 pm
ch1212
thanks for posting that, nan. We're planning to travel out of country later this year. Apparently, the US Border agents can check anyone's cell phones at an entry point, including US citizens. I did not know that. I just read an article about buying a pre-paid 'burner' cheap cell phone to take for travelling. We might do that. There's nothing interesting on our phones, but I'm a private person --- as much as anyone can be these days.
1:27 pm
cybernan
he hasn't had much time to do anything -- counter tariffs in place. I think once he gets into trade talks with Trump and Co. he won't be the pushover that Trudeau was.
1:29 pm
cybernan
Anything Trump wants is legal in the states now -- he has the Justice department's hands tied -- the USA is a democracy in name only now. Look how they are treating their "political" prisoners and detainees -- most people provide better conditions for their animals.

I understand, nan. It was heartening to see the 5M protesters across the country at the 'Hands Off' rallies. Our local chapter is so crowded with people at the meetings that they have gone to zoom to accomodate everyone.
Historically, the passive, non-violent movements have been significantly more successful than the violent ones. I have hop.

Theres three books in my library which seem to be Trumps play list. Two are Attwoods - handmaids tale and the Oryx and Crake trilogy, and John Nivens The Fuck-it List. I suppose thats actually 5 books, but for books written so long ago, theyre scarily close, especially the fuck it and the trilogy.
1:40 pm

cyber, i saw a bit of the conversation concerning the 'choosen one' ...i think it's all a lost cause .. i don't know if we can just wait it out and what the other side of the abyss will resemble
2:20 pm
crosshair
Good afternoon, Babblers. :)
2:50 pm
MollyL
People will take you more seriously when discussing politics if you refrain from dramatic statements like "the other side of the abyss".
3:57 pm
Soodle
I disagree Molly. What is happening at the moment in your country is totally unprecedented. Having a raving lunatic in charge of one of the world’s most powerful countries is terrifying. His bombastic speech the other day, when he spoke about other countries leaders ‘kissing his ass’ was reprehensible. The man is a danger to all citizens Planet Earth.
3:57 pm
Soodle
And Hi Mool. I was mid-rant when you appeared. 😊
4:02 pm
MollyL
Which is why people will be persuaded to listen more intently to those who don't spew the dramatic rhetoric that he does.
4:24 pm
8201girl
After 4 years of the demented puppet and the Democrats Trump is the breath of fresh air we desperately needed.
4:26 pm
crosshair
You must forgive us if we get a little hot under the collar when discussing Trump and his actions, but he is playing with the stock market like it is a rigged golf game as one of his courses while while peoples business go under and life savings are erased while he threatens, backs of, threatenes and backs off again. He seems to think that it is a game.
4:35 pm
crosshair
Of course the 25% remains on Canada and Mexico the last time I checked, so we continue with our countrr-teriffs.
4:36 pm
crosshair
Excuse the typos. :)
4:37 pm

Trump doesn't scare me half as much as the people who support him do. But then, Hitler and Jim Jones had supporters too.
4:38 pm
moolingwa
hey sood, sorry for the delay...was on a call
4:38 pm
crosshair
I will agree with you on that one, molly. It seems like he is being fed ideas form someone on the inside. There is no way that he is coming up with all of this on his own.
4:40 pm
crosshair
Well, all of Jim Jones acolytes wound up dead. Hope it does not happen in this case.
4:42 pm
crosshair
I can almost see Musk telling him when to add tariffs and when to back off.
4:43 pm
moolingwa
Musk wants zero tariffs :)
4:43 pm
crosshair
Only because this is killing him in the stock market.
4:44 pm
moolingwa
Peter Navarro appears to be the one helping Trump implement the tariffs, but the idea predates him
4:44 pm
crosshair
But you can be sure Musk is buying when the market tanks.
4:44 pm
moolingwa
I feel we have more tanking to do yet
4:45 pm
crosshair
Nothing like presidential supplied insider trading, eh?
4:46 pm
moolingwa
The insider trading story to me is a bit of a red herring.
There's a lot more suspect stuff going on, from Trump's $1 million dollar dinner invites to his political appointees in the various agencies giving out grants to their buddies
4:47 pm
crosshair
8201girl, I do not think that those who are in the U.S tourism business will agree with you.
4:48 pm
crosshair
Oh, I am sure there is lots of nasty stuff going on in the background ss well.
4:48 pm
moolingwa
Or small business owners, or farmers, or immigrants...or people collecting social security, or those disabled veterans who lost their jobs
4:49 pm
crosshair
I wonder if he charges his security detail the full rate when he is at one of his resorts, for example.
4:49 pm
moolingwa
But at least the wealthiest people will get tax cuts, while the country goes further into debt
4:49 pm
moolingwa
he did the first time round crossy
4:49 pm
crosshair
The rich get richer.
4:50 pm
moolingwa
Can't imagine it's changed, plus he's fired a bunch of the people who would inspect that kind of abuse
4:50 pm
crosshair
He has so many grifts going it is impossible to keep track of them all.
4:51 pm
moolingwa
Meanwhile they also downsized the IRS, making it easier for the wealthier folks and corporations to avoid paying taxes
4:51 pm
moolingwa
Almost all that information is out there, for anyone interested in looking
4:52 pm
crosshair
Is he still working on gutting the SS?
4:52 pm
moolingwa
The grant stuff isn't publicly available yet as far as I know
4:52 pm
Christa
How do I turn off the chat?
4:53 pm
moolingwa
Click on any of the boxes above like who's online
4:54 pm
crosshair
We are trying to keep abreast of his actions, but you almost need a playbook, plus we are turned inward to bolster ourselve and looking at other partners, other markets.
4:54 pm
moolingwa
On Social Security it appears 7000 of the 60,000 employees are to be let go, and there's reports they may look to fire as much as half
4:55 pm
crosshair
Sorry, I should not hog the chog with politics.
4:55 pm
moolingwa
Yeah, that happened in his first administration. Soy bean farmers in the US lost market share in China and never got it back after those tariffs.
4:56 pm
crosshair
But it is a facet in everyone lives now. Nobody is unaffected.
4:57 pm
crosshair
Canada, Mexico, and China are the canaries in the coal mine.
4:58 pm
crosshair
One interesting thing to note us that Denmark recently purchased the entire rail system that services the Panama Canal. That will frost Trumps cojones. :(
4:59 pm
moolingwa
Yeah, I think the days of the US leading the world economy are coming to an end.
Untrustworthy partner, attacks friends, policies shifting without any warning. Countries are going to go find better suppliers and invest elsewhere rather than the US, which will hurt the US economy for decades
5:00 pm
crosshair
I think so as well. Things will never be as they once were.
5:00 pm
moolingwa
took less than 80 days to accomplish all that :)
5:01 pm
crosshair
One good thing is that Trump made us look inward, come together as a nation, and realize that we can improve ourself, and not to have all of our trading eggs in one basket.
5:03 pm
moolingwa
Did expose Poilievre quite a bit...some dramatic poll shifts up there in a very short time
5:03 pm
crosshair
Our LNG plant is coming online ss we speak, and the E.U is ready to place orders. We are setting up car deals with Japan, aluminum deals with China.
5:03 pm
crosshair
P.P is not my choice for P.M
5:04 pm
moolingwa
Yeah, doesn't seem like someone I would get behind
5:05 pm
crosshair
Oh and we ordered a early detection system fron the Aussies.
5:06 pm
crosshair
Plus we are working trade deals with them. My worry is that should things continue as they are, the U.S will become an isolated country.
5:06 pm
MollyL
That is how it always should have been in Canada. It shouldn't have taken Trump to do that.
5:07 pm
moolingwa
I keep trying to find words from tiles I've already completed
5:07 pm
crosshair
You are right, molly. We are erasing inter-provincial trade barriers which should have been done long ago.
5:08 pm
crosshair
Trade with the U.S has always bern a marriage if conveinience, but no more.
5:09 pm
moolingwa
Well I think it's logically the case. Shipping goods has a cost, so keeping things closer always makes more financial sense
5:09 pm
MollyL
The sad thing about America is that we are now being "led" by someone as tyrannical as the Brit King we stood up to in the first place.
5:10 pm
moolingwa
And it's not logical what is happening, so it was really a very low risk.
As for the interprovincial thing, that should have happened ages ago :)
5:10 pm
crosshair
With and extra 25% tacked on it no longer makes sense.
5:11 pm
crosshair
Lumer is even higher, though I do not have a oercentage on that. It changes so fast.
5:12 pm
moolingwa
chances are it'll chance next week, or tomorrow anyway
5:13 pm
crosshair
Wonder when he is going to refloat his previous idea of opening up the national parks for lumber?
5:13 pm
moolingwa
Maybe recycle on beds :)
5:13 pm
moolingwa
We could also disassemble all those old unused railway tracks if you don't mind a bit of arsenic in your wood
5:15 pm
crosshair
Wait until new U.S home build cost 25% more. He cannot replace all that lumber in a heartbeat.
5:16 pm
moolingwa
Was just reading this morning that about 20-25% of a new residential build is sourced from materials from China
5:16 pm
crosshair
Plus the extra 10% on potash that U.S farmers need to grow food.
5:16 pm
moolingwa
Not to mention rounding up all those illegal aliens who were doing some of that work
5:17 pm
moolingwa
I hear that Canada has some pretty nifty farm tech too that is now far more expensive
5:17 pm
crosshair
We are all globally connected, and there us not much Trump can do to change that.
5:17 pm
moolingwa
A no-plough seed planting unit I think
5:18 pm
crosshair
We have some hydroponic setup for commercial farming that will blow your mind.
5:18 pm
crosshair
It is quite fascinating.
5:18 pm
moolingwa
Amazon and Walmart are going to get hammered on costs
5:18 pm
crosshair
No soil at all is involved.
5:19 pm
crosshair
Yup. Much of Walmart SKU's are from China.
5:21 pm
moolingwa
The danger is that he's created this appearance of a problem that doesn't exist. Trade deficits aren't a bad thing, but the terminology gives the appearance of somehting bad
5:21 pm
crosshair
Canada also made a deal with Brazil for juice oranges.
5:22 pm
crosshair
We are 40 million. There us no way in hell we will buy as much from the U.S as they buy from us.
5:22 pm
moolingwa
The ability to provide good paying jobs is more related to advancements in technology and investment in science...but he's gutting that.
So the US is on course to become less innovative, have less of value to the world, and be protectionist, which will create higher prices for anyone who lives here
5:23 pm
crosshair
But what we send down is top shelf stuff--oil, electricity, potash, aluminum, etc.
5:24 pm
crosshair
The U.S is simply not equipped to produce the same ammount of aluminum that it used to buy from us.
5:25 pm
moolingwa
Unfortunately much of the economic detail is beyond the average voter's typical level of interest, so he's getting to destroy a lot of things which will take much longer to manifest as bad
5:25 pm
crosshair
Or nickle, or potash.
5:25 pm
moolingwa
It doesn't make sense to produce something if it doesn't lead to good revenue streams and/or good paying jobs
5:25 pm
crosshair
Yup. Fiddling while "Rome" burns.
5:26 pm
crosshair
Well, they simply fo not have the capacity to oroduce ut.
5:26 pm
crosshair
Produce it*
5:27 pm
moolingwa
I don't blame the voters so much as I blame congress who've abdicated any responsibility here
5:28 pm
crosshair
I think it will get much worse before it gets better.
5:28 pm
moolingwa
nor is anyone likely to invest in building infrastructure to make it here in the US, because it would be very risky to do so knowing that it can be made cheaper elsewhere
5:28 pm
crosshair
Which is why we are scrambling for ither trading oartners.
5:29 pm
crosshair
Please excuse my typing.
5:29 pm
moolingwa
They would need to have significant government handouts to make them viable in the global marke
5:30 pm
moolingwa
which means tax-payer funded. Something he did in the first term to try and offset the pain for the farmers
5:30 pm
crosshair
It makes no sense for any business to move to the U.S at this point in time. Things are so volitile that they will wait.
5:31 pm
crosshair
Yes, the U.S has 340 million vustomers, but the E.U has more.
5:31 pm
moolingwa
For sure...business investment requires stability and predictability, and there's none of that here, because Trump appears to be making policy reactively rather than thoughtfully
5:31 pm
crosshair
Brb must take the pups out.
5:31 pm
moolingwa
China and India also have more, and have been growing their middle class
5:32 pm
moolingwa
Which in theory would ultimately help the US, because then they'd be able to afford US made products
5:33 pm
moolingwa
creating more wealthy across more people both in the US and globally makes good business sense.
Giving tax breaks to people who don't need to spend more money is the opposite of that unfortunately
5:36 pm
moolingwa
reducing innovation and education just means that it becomes harder to obtain wealth.
I'm not a huge fan of government mandated education, but I also recognize that many people don't have the resources, and so it provides a mechanism to improve lives for the next generations
5:36 pm
moolingwa
Anyways, still have 6 to go here
5:38 pm

Yes, ee bets give the chig vack. :)

5:42 pm
