Hello
5:05 am
Book Doctor Gwen

greetings, i missed you! (diving in)
5:37 am
crosshair

Good morning, babblers
5:38 am
Scrabbler

How are you feeling today, Crossy?
5:39 am
crosshair

Not too rough at the moment. Just taking it easy, staying hydrated, soups/broths, lots of sleep.
5:40 am
Scrabbler

Good.
5:40 am
crosshair

Just have to ride it out.
5:40 am
Scrabbler

Yep
5:41 am
crosshair

More than a man-cold, less than the full blown flu it seems.
5:43 am
crosshair

The biggest pain is everything wants to go right to the lungs, but I have my puffers at need.
5:44 am
Scrabbler

Did you do a COVID test? Best done on day 4 of illness. Swab throat, inside of cheeks, then nose.
5:45 am
crosshair

I have a test kit at the ready and will do the swab day after tomorrow.
5:46 am
Scrabbler

Good.
5:47 am
Book Doctor Gwen

hoope it's not The Rona -- good luck
5:48 am
Book Doctor Gwen

*ope (blaming the keyboard)
5:48 am
crosshair

I always blame the keyboard :)
5:48 am
Book Doctor Gwen

*hope (gadzooks)
5:49 am
Scrabbler

It's either the keyboard or autocorrect.
5:49 am
crosshair

Autocorrect drives me nuts.
5:49 am
Book Doctor Gwen

this time is *is* the keyboard
5:50 am
crosshair

Especially when using M.S Word.
5:51 am
Scrabbler

Autocorrect creates some odd mistakes. I try to be careful before hitting SEND
5:51 am
Book Doctor Gwen

i have a laptop with a keyboard that is too small so I have a spare keyboard hooked up to it, and if I type too fast I get dounle letters sometimes
5:52 am
Book Doctor Gwen

*double letters (cripes)
5:53 am
Book Doctor Gwen

thank goodness there's no autocorrect in this chatbox
5:53 am
crosshair

Lol, that would be a nightmare!
5:54 am
Scrabbler

The worst we do is toss free clues in the chat, and that is very generous.
5:54 am
Book Doctor Gwen

autocorrect prolly doesn't understand "chatbox" or "prolly"
5:58 am
Scrabbler

Prolly not
6:02 am
Scrabbler

I passed halfway so I am done. Enjoy the day.
6:03 am
crosshair

Hoping to do a test hike of the trails soon to see what shape they are in.
6:03 am
Scrabbler

It's mud season. Don't slip.
6:04 am
crosshair

Prolly a muddy, swampy mess at the moment.
6:04 am
crosshair

Still quite a bit of snow pack under the trees as well.
6:13 am
Book Doctor Gwen

36 to go, time for a break, no long hikes till you're better, dude
8:31 am

8:36 am

8:48 am
crosshair

Ouch! We just hit $1.70/per litre for gasoline today. :( I bought $50 worth and I did not even get half a tank in my Jeep. :(
8:53 am
crosshair

Just glad I no longer drive for work. :)
8:56 am

not american chestnuts
11:47 am

moolingwa

and a 6
11:47 am
hokie carla

well it got decimated by a blight back in the early 1900s or so. they were like redwood sized trees. now they only grow to like 3'.
11:47 am
moolingwa

oh
11:48 am
moolingwa

so old chestnuts refer to american chestnuts then I guess
11:48 am
hokie carla

"they" are still are trying to still trying to bring it back
11:48 am
moolingwa

It's nice of "they" to do that
11:49 am

tree scientists? biologists? arborists?
11:49 am
moolingwa

chestnutters
11:49 am
moolingwa

found another 6
11:50 am
hokie carla

well, the wiki I'm now reading says there are mature ones outside the native region of the appalachians
11:51 am
moolingwa

well, then you can indeed get new chestnuts
11:51 am
moolingwa

"they" figured it out
11:51 am
hokie carla

I asked my grandmother about them. She was born in 1910. I think the blight was introduced in 1904. She remembered seeing them.
11:52 am
moolingwa

we had a chestnut tree in NZ, but I suspect it was a European one
11:52 am
moolingwa

phantom curlew btw
11:52 am
hokie carla

there's a lot of sciency science on what "they're" doing to make a blight resistant one in that article.
11:53 am
moolingwa

very cool
11:53 am
hokie carla

the blight came from a japanese one
11:53 am
moolingwa

Good evening, Babblers.:) Taking a small break from a book I started today called Hail Mary, by Andy Weir. Seems pretty good so far, but I am only about 25 pages in or so. Every time I pick up a novel these days, I realize how much I miss the act of reading a very good story, and give myself heck for allowing the internet and social media go gobble up most of the idle time I use to spend lost in a good book. I always think of how good it is, and why don't I read like I used to back in the day. The internet is easy, but the books--the books are much more rewarding to my soul. I need a good power outage for a week or so. Lots of sandwiches by candlelight, beverages of an adult nature, and a good story to fall into. :)

Crossy, I read that book a few months ago and was thrilled. I grew up devouring the masters of science fiction and Hail Mary rates right up there with with Asimov, Ellison, Zelzany, Blish, etc. I haven't decided if I want to watch the movie yet.

One thing I used to love about Asimov's sort stories were his "zinger" endings. He would hit you with something so climatic, so unexpected that you would find yourself pondering it while staring at a blank wall for ten minutes after you turned the last page.
