Where i live, we’re in drought. We need rain. Or a hurricane or tropical storm desperately.
11:06 am
bichon
surprisingly, we've had over 5" of rain this month
11:07 am
BzznBea
Yes, parts of North Carolina are in extreme drought. We have had about 5 inches over the last week, but that is not near enough to ease our drought situation.
11:07 am
dcseain
yeah, we’ve had rain, enough to make the ground moist, but not muddy, even on the day the streets flooded.
11:14 am
Flask1
Does anyone worry about all these fires, a wee country like our has them in three different....If I say am worried, I would just get laughed at....:(

I worry about wildfires. Our sky turned yellow for 3 days until it rained. Then it turned delightfuly cool

Smoke season is here in Calgary - sent to us from BC's forests. I don't remember this ever being a problem when I was a child.
11:45 am
bichon
We certainly had no smake problems when I was young. I guess we screwed up the earth
11:46 am
Gillie
It's possible there were times it happened when I was young that I don't remember, but it certainly wasn't one of summer's defining features.
11:47 am
bichon
I grew up at the shore. Summer was blue skys and the surf

Thursday night we went to the boardwalk to see fireworks
11:57 am

I'd never heard of mu5 grass before, but I guess there are varieties that can grow in parts of Canada. It's pretty.

We had an idyllic life. My parent's biggest worry was polio. We were so happy when Jonas Salk developed a vaccine. Everyone got one.
12:01 pm
Gillie
And I'm young enough never to have worried about polio - but I guess that could change

I had measels. I was very sick, but recovered.
12:18 pm

I live in a measels area right now. I need to get checked because every time I have been over the years I've been "not immune" and had to get another shot.
12:18 pm
hokie carla
rehi, folks
12:19 pm
Gillie
I should maybe get checked - I can't remember having them, or my parents saying that I did, but I'm of an age where it's assumed that I must have had exposure.
12:21 pm
Gillie
But we're not currently having an outbreak here, at least (that I've heard of)
12:23 pm
Flask1
The Polio Vaccine was too late for me.....I caught it in 1974......was affected from the neck down to my toes.
12:24 pm
Gillie
I take it back - there is "ongoing transmission" in Alberta
12:24 pm

That's too bad Flask
12:24 pm

Yikes - did you recover?

12:26 pm
Flask1
Its been difficult....hower, I will be 72 in September, but I'm very very weak now....but alive!
12:28 pm
Gillie
When I think of polio, I think of the iron lungs - which were horrible machines to be in, from the look of it.
12:29 pm
Flask1
Yes....I was in one for a short time only....
12:35 pm
Gillie
Anyway, I'm done. Sorry if my conversation has been a bit depressing - I have a hard time avoiding it these days. Good babbling, everyone!
12:35 pm

OK....am outta here....I really don't know enough weird words to get thro' it.....G'nite all.....
12:46 pm
hokie carla
rehi again. polio was terrible. I can't believe people won't vaccinate their kids for that.
12:58 pm
mkg
agree carla. amazing to think anyone doesnt get that one.i remember the horror of polio.......i was in a group who got the vaccine first: it was a trial and my parents had phone calls with their entire familes as to whether or not to put me into that test group. i am an only child so what if i got polio from the vacinne? that was the risk. there were kids who died from the test i think. anyway they decided yes and i therefore had to get vacinnated over and over and over again since the first test strength was very weak. as i recall every six months or year our entire small town had to line up again at the high school in line to get re-vacinated. so many injections! but we wiped out polio.
12:59 pm
mkg
i am not sure why our town was a test site. perhaps because it was small? but i know i was vaccinated before all my cousins who lived elsewhere.
1:00 pm
hokie carla
I was born in the 70s so didn't have to witness it. I think that's the problem with new parent anti-vaxxers - like 3 generations removed so no collective memory
1:02 pm
mkg
while i dont want to burst any bubbles, the idylic life was really not so idyllic if you were not a white wasp. lets remember in the 50s blacks were still suffering terribly in the u.s.a.
1:02 pm
mkg
i dont get anti vax people at all.
1:08 pm
hokie carla

my ex was super healthy, never got sick, i think that's part of it, didn't know anyone who got sick and then yes, only reads/listens to maga BS
1:31 pm
Shirlockc
i didn't get covid until after i got vaxxed so i wasn't that sick
2:02 pm
crosshair
I was in the food industry when covid first came out, so I did not have the option of only thinking of myself by deciding not not get vaccinated.
2:03 pm
crosshair
Our store, on average, gets 3000 customers per day, so we were amongst the first in our area to get vaccinated in order to protect the customs mers and our families.
2:11 pm
crosshair
We were deemed an "essential service," so no staying at home for us. We got the early shots, then took the risk with all those unvaccinated customers each and every day for months. My first shot was the India-sourced Astra-zenica (sp) because of the severe shortage of other brands of vaccine at the time.
2:13 pm
crosshair
So, anti-vaxxers temd to annoy me unless there is a underlying medical condition that prevents them from getting vaccinated.
2:27 pm
crosshair
Just found a yl4 and 5 :)
2:58 pm
Gillie
Apparently, the oral polio vaccine used in some places in the world (not North America) can cause an infection in roughly 1 in 2.7 million cases, and it can also (rarely) lead to community infection in under-vaccinated populations. Also, in 1955 there was a manufacturing error (the Cutter incident) that resulted in vaccines where the virus was not properly deactivated. Of 200,000 children who received the vaccine, 40,000 developed polio symptoms, including paralysis to some degree in about 200, and 5 died. Maybe that's what mkg was thinking of.
